Churches across the country are struggling with engaging men.
There are many thoughts on what could/should be done. The bottom line is we must find ways to use the skills and gifts that men have in a way that makes us feel needed. Thinking about those strengths here are 5 ways to plug into your local church and maintain your man card:
#1 Safety & Security
This is an area that every church unfortunately had to step up with regards to recent events. Men were designed with the protection gene and what better way to serve than to be the literal sheep dog standing guard. If your church does not have a safety/security team be the man that gets it going and take this burden off the staff.
#2 Sound & Video
Who doesn’t love to play with mixing boards and cameras. Seriously, if you have an interest in this area that is a great way to serve and often these roles are done out of sight out of mind. For the man that doesn’t want to be the center of attention, working in the sound booth is a great way to serve on any given Sunday. You may or may not be able to set your Fantasy football lineup while doing this service but remember the Holy Spirit is watching 😉
#3 Youth/Children Outings
Trust me your youth/children departments have a shortage of strong capable men. Find out what events are being planned that you could participate with. For youth boys there is a great opportunity to take them camping, hiking or anything that gets them outdoors. The impact you can make on the next generation is huge – and these young men need role models – time to step up.
#4 Budget & Finance
More money more problems – just kidding! Seriously though, many churches have complex financial situations. This is not an area that you want weak leadership overseeing the funds. Find out what the process entails in getting engaged with the committee/group that manages the money and volunteer. At a minimum be aware of how the budget is set/spent for your church and ask questions! If you have a question so does 10 other people – man up and get it on the table.
#5 Recreation Leadership
Men connect shoulder to shoulder and the more sweat the better. Most church leagues are volunteer led and it only takes a few strong committed men to make a tremendous impact. From basketball, softball, volleyball, and even corn hole, there are a ton of ways to serve your church in recreation. Grab the bull by the horns here men and watch what happens when you get men consistently engaging in competitive recreation sports.
So, there you have it – 5 masculine ways to serve at your church.
Now is when the rubber meets the road. Are you going to act like a Lion and make one of these a reality? You can do this, it will likely not be easy, but remember the meaningful things in life rarely are. Keep that man card close and have some fun serving. That’s what Unleashing the Lion Within is all about!
