Galatians 6:10
In this verse, Paul issues a clarion call for believers to engage in active, intentional living. It’s a rallying cry to step off the sidelines and into the game of life, recognizing that every breath we take is proof that God still has a purpose for us. Too often, we disqualify ourselves from action—letting fear, failure, or fatigue bench us. But this verse reminds us that as long as we have opportunities, we have responsibilities to do good and to encourage one another.

The Call to Action
Paul’s words highlight two groups: everyone and the household of faith. As believers, we’re called to be lights in the world, spreading kindness and compassion to all people. However, there’s a special emphasis on building up fellow believers. Why? Because we are a family united by Christ, tasked with bearing one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2) and strengthening each other in the faith.
Getting off the bench starts with understanding this dual mission. It’s not about waiting for the perfect moment or some grand, orchestrated act of service. It’s about recognizing the daily opportunities God places before us to uplift and bless those around us.
Opportunities Are Everywhere
Paul writes, “as we have opportunity,” implying that God places opportunities before us constantly. Yet, how often do we overlook them? Maybe we’re too distracted by our own struggles or consumed with feelings of inadequacy.
The truth is, we don’t need a title, platform, or perfect circumstances to make a difference. The simple act of smiling at someone, praying for a friend, or sending a word of encouragement can have eternal impact. Each moment of connection is a chance to glorify God and reflect His love.
If you’re breathing, God isn’t finished with you. The fact that you’re alive today means there are people He wants you to bless, words He wants you to speak, and acts of service He wants you to perform.
Encouragement: A Ministry for Everyone
Paul’s challenge to “do good” includes more than physical acts of service—it encompasses encouragement. In a world weighed down by negativity and despair, encouragement is a powerful way to reflect God’s character.
Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us, “Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together…but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
We have the privilege of being “chief encouragement officers” in the lives of those around us. That doesn’t require eloquence or extraordinary effort. It requires authenticity, humility, and intentionality. Speak life into your brothers in Christ. Acknowledge their struggles, celebrate their victories, and remind them of God’s faithfulness. Your words might be the very thing that propels them back into the game.
The Danger of Staying on the Bench
When we withdraw from actively engaging in God’s work, we not only rob others of the blessing we could bring—we rob ourselves of the joy that comes from obedience. Sitting on the bench fosters isolation, self-doubt, and spiritual stagnation.
Consider Moses, who doubted his ability to lead. Or Gideon, who saw himself as the least of his family. God didn’t call them because they were qualified—He called them because He equips those He calls. The same is true for us. Whatever excuses you have—fear, busyness, or self-doubt—lay them down at God’s feet. He doesn’t need your perfection, just your willingness.
Practical Ways to Get in the Game
- Pray for Opportunities: Start your day by asking God to show you where He wants you to act. Be sensitive to His leading and ready to respond.
- Encourage Someone Daily: Whether it’s a text, call, or face-to-face conversation, make it a habit to speak life into someone’s day.
- Serve with Purpose: Identify needs within your church or community and step up to meet them. Whether it’s mentoring, volunteering, or simply being present, your actions matter.
- Stay Connected: Surround yourself with other believers who can sharpen and encourage you (Proverbs 27:17). Iron sharpens iron, and community keeps us accountable.
- Reflect Christ’s Love: Remember that every act of goodness points others to Jesus. Let His love guide your words and actions.
Finish Strong
As men of God, we are called to live with purpose and urgency. The opportunities before us are finite, and our time on earth is brief. Galatians 6:10 challenges us to leave no good deed undone, no word of encouragement unsaid, and no opportunity unseized.
Get off the bench. The game of life isn’t over, and there’s still work to be done. Lean into God’s strength, speak life into others, and be the leader He’s calling you to be. The household of faith—and the world—is counting on you.
