Example from Mark
What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?
2 Timothy 3:14-15
In the bustling world we live in, it’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of success and achievement. Our lives often resemble a profit and loss statement, where we meticulously evaluate the gains and losses. But, have you ever considered applying this financial concept to your spiritual journey? The Wisdom of Mark: The Second Gospel
Mark, the second Gospel in the New Testament, is often hailed as the action Gospel. It vividly chronicles many of the extraordinary deeds and teachings of Jesus during his earthly ministry. Among the wisdom it imparts, Mark 8:36 stands out as a profound contemplation on the priorities in our lives: profit and loss.
The Business of Life
For those familiar with the business world, managing a profit and loss (P&L) statement is a daily task. It’s a tool that reveals the health of a business and indicates whether it’s on the right track. When we look at a P&L, we swiftly assess the profit side and the loss side.
Profit – This is what remains after expenses are covered. It signifies the core earnings, the tangible rewards of our efforts.
Loss – This side represents the costs, the sacrifices made to achieve that profit. It reminds us that success often comes with trade-offs.
Now, let’s apply this financial analogy to our spiritual lives. Imagine your life as a spiritual P&L statement.
Assessing Your Spiritual P&L
Begin by examining your “profit” side:
- How often are you investing in your relationship with God?
- Are you seeking wisdom and discernment through prayer?
- Do you have fellow believers who sharpen your faith like iron sharpens iron?
- Are you leading your family in spiritual growth through prayer and Bible study?
These are the spiritual deposits that build up the profit side of your personal P&L.
Challenges and Expenses
The challenges of life are like unexpected expenses that threaten to erode our spiritual profits:
- Disappointments from family or friends.
- Unrealistic expectations at work.
- The constant pull of worldly desires.
These are the tests and trials that gauge the strength of your spiritual P&L. The evil one seeks to withdraw from your spiritual account at every opportunity, so the question remains: will your spiritual P&L be overdrawn, or will you maintain a positive balance?
The Pursuit of Worldly Success
Success, as perceived by the world, is often fleeting and superficial. Putting all your hopes and dreams into this temporal pursuit can leave you feeling empty and unfulfilled. It’s a reminder that worldly success is circumstantial and can’t fill the void that only a deep, meaningful relationship with Christ can.
The Abundant Life
Jesus beckons us toward an abundant life, one filled with purpose and contentment. It begins with seeking a profound connection with Him. Invite Him into every aspect of your life: your business, your marriage, your parenting, your finances. As you do, you’ll find guidance, direction, and an overflow of blessings you never imagined. Surrendering to Him is the first step to living a life where you will find the profit that He desires for you.
