Welcome to The Lion Within Us, a podcast serving Christian men who are hungry to be the leaders Got to tend you to be. I’m your host, chris Granger. Let’s jump in. All right, guys, fun Friday time. You made it to the end of the week, all right, we get too far though.
00:16
Let’s dig into our scripture of the week. We’ve been in the book of Job, chapter 14, verses 7 through 9. It says, for there is hope for a tree when it is cut down, that it will sprout again and it shoots, will not fail. Though its roots grow old in the ground and its stump dies in the dry soil at the scent of water, it will flourish and will produce sprigs like a plant. Guys love that little piece of scripture right there. Go back to the spiritual kickoff, if you missed it. Really unpack what that looks like around the hope that we can have when we put the hope to write things in this world. That led us directly to our conversation with author Benjamin Wendell for our Meet episode this week. What a fun conversation with Benjamin. We really unpack the things of what catastrophes in our life, how they can turn to hope For me, what I looked about through that conversation with Benjamin the piece where he says hope needs.
01:19
Human skin just keeps jumping out over and over and over As you look at what’s going on in this world and how isolated people are, how disconnected we are. You may have thousands of friends on Facebook. Well, good for you. How many actual connections do you have? How many people can you get pick up right now, make a phone call to, and they know what’s going on in your life. They know the intimate details. They’re praying for you. They had the refrigerator rights, guys like that right. Do you have those guys? Because the stats tell us we don’t. We don’t have that. We have surface level. Surface level is not going to cut it when the real trials, tribulations of life hit. They’re going to hit fellas, it’s just a matter of time.
02:08
I’m telling you, you’re the N1 coming out of one and getting ready to go into one. We need to be able to understand it. If you’re putting your thoughts in your circumstances and you’re trying to chase happy, it’s just going to flee. It’s going to go away, because happy is going to come up and down based off of what’s going on around you. You can find hope, you can find joy, when you put that in the right place. That right place is in Jesus. Benjamin and I. We spent a lot of time talking about that, guys. Hopefully you guys get a chance to listen to that one. I would love to know your feedback around that for sure. I also found out Benjamin’s moving to a great state of Tennessee. He’s going to be even closer, so, who knows, maybe we’ll be able to connect and go, maybe have some veggie mic together or something like that. There you go, check that out. Really enjoyed that conversation and thought that was one that, from a hope and hardship standpoint, i know we’re all going through some stuff so it’s time to take that to the next level. If you know somebody who’s struggling right now, that would be one that you may want to share with them. Share this out. We’ll just go check out his book for sure and see if you can learn some things from there that you could pass on to others.
03:19
All right now, fun Friday time. Let’s get to our tips. We’ve got a health tip, a wealth tip and our self-tip. Remember health is mind and body, health is career and finances, self is husbands and dads. Okay, now our hell tip. This came from our community or some guys are talking about this.
03:36
But just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Okay, just think about that for a second. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Our calendars get so jam up, so jammed up and we do. That happens a lot of times because we have the ability to do stuff You don’t want to miss out, right? this FOMO is real fear, missing out. I’m just telling you, fellas, the best thing you can do as a leader is make sure that calendar reflects what you desire and what God desires. God first, obviously. But just cause you can do some things, don’t mean you should, because that may not even be the best use of your time. You’re only allowed a lot at your 24 hours in a day 1440 minutes. I don’t have any seconds, that is. Maybe somebody can reply to let us know on that. But you only have it’s time, is fine, okay. So you need to be careful and intentional around how you spend that time, about what you’re doing.
04:30
You know something for some of you guys that may mean you have to outsource things, right, you have to let go, you have to relinquish control of certain things. But if you do that, that is a mark of a leader. You know Someone who wants to hold on everything and keep it close to their vests and not let anybody else do it. That that’s insecure. That’s what. That is what insecurity looks like. Guys, i see that all around. I see that in churches. I see that where we have certain leaders I see that we’re certain leaders do not want to let go. They want to hold on to these things. They want to. You know what I don’t like. I don’t want to let that go. I want to hold on this because if I hold on to this, that means I bring value And you see that. just know that is a sign of insecurity. Now, if that is you, that could be showing a sign of insecurity right there. So we’re relinquish, let go.
05:20
Just because you can do some things doesn’t mean you should so take that, apply that. Think about that. Think about your calendar. Maybe pull out your calendar right now and see what’s on the calendar for the next week. What’s on that calendar for the next week that you could delegate, remove or Or just completely, just actually nuke it, get out of it right. What’s there? I guarantee you can find two or three things. Now, when you, when you get that stuff off, what can you replace that time with, to better do an align to what God’s called you to do. That’s leadership. That’s Christian leadership. That’s what you need to do. Just remember that. Okay, now Let’s move to our wealth tip.
06:05
Now, if you’re itemizing tax deductions, i ran across something called the six P’s of proper tax deductions. Here’s the six P’s Place point in time, purchase amount, present documentation, person and purpose. Now let’s break these down a little bit. The place where did you purchase the item at? You need to have that. How about point in time? Got to have a date. Everything’s got to be time stamp. Purchase amount Obviously, we need to know what the total expenditure is. How about the present documentation? This is going to be your physical or virtual receipt. Got to have it? Got to have those things? The person Think about who the expense was with. Was it for meals, was it for meetings, were it events, things like that. Then the last is the purpose Why did you make the purchase? If you are starting to do tax deduction and you’re breaking these different items down, six P’s will keep you out of trouble. It’ll also set you up to do the tax deductions the right way, the effective way, and will save you time. So just keep those six P’s down Place, point in time, purchase, present documentation, purpose, person and purpose. I’ll tell you what. If you can say that five times, real fast, you get a gold star. There you go, fellas, but check that out. That’s six P’s when you’re doing your tax deductions. Now your self-tip.
07:35
I want to share a story with you, okay, and it came up recently. But the bottom line is this when you hear your kids talking bad about themselves, you got to stop it. You got to stop it. So recently my oldest daughter. We were playing softball, we were at a game and then she plays first base and she was just having an off night. We’ve all had those nights.
07:57
She was having an off night She takes it very personal And it was just a wild throw for shortstop, but she couldn’t get to it And so the ball went to the fence So the runners were running. She got the ball back in the way she should, but I was standing there and she came up to me after I ended and she’s like I’m terrible, i absolutely suck at first base And I stopped her. I said to her tell you what? I don’t let people talk to you that way and I’m not gonna let you talk to yourself that way either. And she stopped. She’s like, huh, i’m like I’m not. I am not gonna allow you to speak to yourself that way. You are a bloodbought daughter of the king. Yeah, you had an off ending. It’s gonna happen. You have any off endings? I had, growing up, lots of them.
08:44
But the negative talk got stopped because that is not gonna define you. But whether or not you make a good play on first base or not, it’s not defined who you are. But I’ll tell you what it is impacting your testimony around all these other girls that are watching you As they see you as a leader. And if you’re a leader, they’re watching you How you respond to adversity matters. This is a great lesson for her.
09:06
So if you hear your kids talking about, hey, i can’t do things, or if you hear kids say that I’m dumb or I’m stupid or I’m terrible, stop it. Put a firm foot down and say, nope, that type of talk is not allowed in our house, and here’s why You’re a bloodbought daughter or son of the king. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. God has a plan for you. He is ordained for the days of your life and he has a plan for each and every one of those days, to start speaking positivity into them. Make sure they know that you’re not gonna allow, as the head of the home, as the leader, you’re not gonna allow them to talk to themselves that way. I’m telling you, fellas, if you start doing stuff like this, now here’s a trick. You can’t do that to yourself either. So I can’t be walking around My kids being like I can’t believe I blew that, i can’t believe I’m so stupid, i can’t believe I can’t close that deal, whatever it is, stop it, because you’re just portraying that to them. Okay, so stop that right now. You don’t speak to yourself that way, you don’t let others speak to you that way, and you better not let your kids speak to themselves that way. Artfields, there’s your three tips your health tip, wealth tip, self tip. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should Get those six Ps down around finances okay, place, point and time, purchase, amount, present, documentation, person and purpose, and it’s self tip. If you hear those kids talking to bad about themselves, you better put a stop to it and put a stop to it immediately. Okay, all right.
10:37
