In this episode:
We unpack Sean’s latest movie, Nefarious.
We explore the profound impact of this cinematic experience and the overwhelmingly positive public response it received. Sean opens up about his creative process as a writer, strongly influenced by his faith, and how he navigates the sea of social media feedback. Furthermore, we tackle the importance of self-defense training for children and the necessity for preparedness in potential physical confrontations, a subject close to Sean’s heart.
Going to church doesn't make you a Christian anymore than standing in a garage makes you a car. The good stuff's never on the surface. It requires a little digging. I wish somebody would've handed me a shovel earlier. Click To Tweet Sean Patrick Flanery

This exposes the spiritual warfare that exists. Sean does a phenomenal job, a phenomenal job of unpacking this character in the various in this movie. You’re going to enjoy this one. Man, at this point I am quite telling in every interview I do that most people don’t know Not much that people don’t know about my life anymore. I should keep a mouth shut more. But really I’m a pretty small town, texas dude, at heart. My granddaddy, when I was growing up, my granddaddy sat on the porch and I remember I wrote a piece of children’s theater. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree. I went out to the porch and I told my granddaddy. I said, hey, granddaddy, i wrote this script. I’m going to go out to California, i’m going to try to produce this script.
03:19
And he said you know, boy, i tell you, you know everybody out there. They want to go to the big city and they want to make something of their self. He said make no mistake, one of these days you’re going to be sitting on the top of a building looking out over all the hustle and bustle And you can say to yourself, man, one of these days I’m going to get me a patch of land And I’m just going to look over God’s great creation. So you know what, son, i’ll meet you right back here. And, crazy enough, i’m right back here, back in Texas. Man, what I’m looking at over now is that’s what brought me to mind. You know, when I left Texas to go out to LA and chase myself, my granddaddy put, summed it up pretty clearly He said when you find it, you’re going to want to come right back here, and so I’ll meet you back here and I’m back in.

Texas man. Amen to that, brother. There’s no place like home, right, yeah, yeah. Well, man, i would love to just hear a little bit about your personal testimony as well, sean. I haven’t checked out a lot of your interviews. I haven’t really heard that a lot. I’ve seen you wear a cross and different things there. but, man, i’m sure our listeners will love to know a little bit about you and where you stand there.

You know I happen to be here, you know, at my desk, for lack of better, but it’s kind of a mess. It’s a. I got to pull up bar, got some weights, I do some. This is where I do all my writing and whatnot. But so I’m looking at all the stuff on my desk and this was. There’s a company called James Avery here in Texas And this was the first St Christopher my dad gave me back when I was six years old. Yeah, And I actually lost this, this big one, And so I got another one, which is the one that I wear all the time. Right, I had one, everybody in the family had one, since I was a kid.
05:29
I was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and you know God’s been a part of my life since I was born. I really didn’t know any different. I mean, we said grace at meals and you know you want to know about testimony. It’s just something you do like taking out the trash. Until, for me at least, until you have kids, I’ll tell you something, man.
06:03
There’s things that really stick with you in the Bible, And one that really sums up my testimony is the engrafted Word of God, When it becomes something that you don’t just recite, but it comes, becomes something that you feel, that you not only believe, but it’s part of you And, realistically, I wore this around my neck man since I was a kid And I didn’t really know what it meant. I mean, I knew I had a relationship with God, I knew I spoke to him, but it didn’t hit me in the chest like a ton of bricks until I had kids. And I’ll tell you something I realized there was a lot of areas in my life that I was a pretty shitty person And it just really makes you recalibrate everything And I mean everything.
07:00
I cannot honestly tell you that I would have gotten here without my kids. They put a lens in front of your eyes that it’s something you’ve never looked through before. Everything in your life changes, and not just Hallmark card crap, but everything. Every single wish, secret, desire, dream is unlike anything you’ve seen before. And so what is my testimony? It’s kids that made me look at everything I was already doing in a very different way And I can honestly say the first half of my life I kind of phoned it in. I went through the motions and I didn’t know really how profound any of the things were that I was reading. But it took on a completely different context when I became a dad and everything in my life changed. And it’s a struggle every single day to be a better person, to be a better husband, to be a better dad, and that’s all I care about in a nutshell.

Amen, brother. I mean, it’s nothing like being a father that brings you to the father, right? I mean it just to me. I was the same way, as you know, like I accepted Christ, but I was just going through the motions, just checking the boxes. But when you hold your baby for the first time, man, like it changes everything about everything. So I’m so appreciative that you shared that.

You know, i’ve never, i’ve never not had a dog in my life. And I’ll tell you, everybody that knows me knows my dog, donut. And we lost Donut man now 10 years ago. But Donut went to every country with me. She traveled everywhere with me And I knew, i knew, i knew I wanted to be a dad since I was a kid And I knew that I would care about a child more than I cared about Donut. I kind of knew that, right, but I had no idea, i mean, for, realistically, i couldn’t imagine caring for something more than I cared for Donut. I couldn’t imagine it. I couldn’t imagine it. Yeah, my bad Lord, how different it is. I mean, it’s, it’s, it’s and don’t get me wrong, i love and adore Donut. She’s a monumental relationship in my timeline, Right, but it could not be more different. Yeah, it’s, it’s it just. Every molecule of your being is reshaped, reformulated, recalibrated. It’s just, it’s something to behold It is man And you have what?

three, three kids. Yes, sir, that’s awesome, that’s so great man. You’ve got to feel that experience three times And just just by seeing your stuff on social, I can tell you’re very engaged father. And that’s what we need more man, just need more men stepping up and leading our kids, leading our families. So hats off to you. Well, you know.
Sean Patrick Flanery

10:10
I’ll tell you. You know it sounds. I’ll tell you where, where, where, where. I think most men go wrong. It’s not stepping up. I mean there, if, if, if doing it is an effort, then you’ve already screwed up. You know, the most important decision a man can make is who he procreates with, and if you make that decision correctly, there is no stepping up. It’s where you want to be. The problem comes in men. The sole criteria for procreation is wow, nice rack.
10:43
Well, i got to tell you that may end in tears, you know, but if you go through the process with like almost a full interview and questioning who are you? who are you really? What, what, what right? How do you want to deal with your life fiscally? Do you believe in home schooling? Do you believe in public schooling? Do you believe in corporal punishment? Is God going to be present? our child’s life, all of these things that can ruin families. Once you get through that and you know none of those are going to set us on fire Then there is no stepping up. There is no.
11:11
I have to muster to be a dad every day And I think I chose correctly. I honestly think I won the wife lottery. She is my dream girl. I can’t imagine a better mom. I honestly it’s, it’s, it’s the most wonderful thing that ever happened in my life. So there’s no effort. I want to spend every waking moment with her and my kids. And I don’t say that like a Hallmark Cardi kind of crap. It’s true. All of your desires, that desire for a new car, goes out the window and it’s recalibrated with. How do we afford this new experience for our kids? And I want her to be right next to me when we have that experience. There is no stepping up if you set it up correctly. In my opinion. In my opinion And God knows, i screwed up a lot in the past, man, but you know they say you get?
12:05
you know you get old too soon and why is too late? You know it’s a daily. I’m figuring out things that I wish I knew a long time ago. Man, i really do.

Hey, man, i’ve always said, man, if you marry the right one, there’s nothing like it, if you marry the wrong one, there’s nothing like it, right? So I mean, you got to make sure you take the time to get the right woman and changes everything. For sure You’re absolutely right, brother. Well, man, let’s dig in. I mean, i know the reason we kind of got together is you’re feeling the farious and, man, it rocked me to the core. I’ve watched it I think three times now. I watched it with my 12-year-old daughter last week. I thought she was mature enough to handle it and it was a great conversation afterwards. I mean, there was just a really eye-opener for her. So, man, just what drew you when you got the script and they saw the role? just walk us through that, because it definitely rocked me to the core.
Sean Patrick Flanery

13:06
You know there’s a lot of things that drew me to the script Number one. As an actor I’m a huge fan of heavy lifting And it’s you know, there’s a lot going on with that character, or there’s actually two characters to play. It was technically, i guess it was what one would consider one of the more difficult roles I’ve ever had to play in my career, and that interests me. I’m kind of incapable of backing down. Like, honestly, if Michael Jordan challenged me to horse, i’d put money on it. I don’t bet money but I would. I would bet pride with him. I would try everything I could in my heart and my soul to beat Michael Jordan, even though I know I would get smoked. So I’m not coming from a place of arrogance like I thought, oh, i’m going to slay this. But you know, that really, really interested me And I knew of Chuck and Kerry’s previous work. I’ve been a fan of theirs since 2004.
14:10
I did a movie with them in 2004. And at the culmination of that film I told them jokingly I said guys, i love y’all. I would do a Fruit Loops commercial with y’all. And they called me two years ago and they said hey, flannery, we’ve got a Fruit Loops commercial And I said put me in coach. And they sent me this script and you know, i had a conversation with my wife And you know, because, you know, because taking on this role, it’s it’s not really embraced or championed by Hollywood, but I knew when I flipped the last page that I was going to do it And my wife wanted me to do it And she wanted me to do it.
14:50
But it was a conversation we had. Anyway, it’s everything about it. It’s the messaging is painfully obvious to all of us, but I don’t think it’s obvious to a lot of people. I didn’t do the movie solely to educate people on what I feel is the absolute truth, but it certainly doesn’t hurt when you do a movie if it hits on a number of different areas. You know, right, artistically, it satiated my need to go out and flex those muscles, if you will. And as far as the messaging, it’s something that I wholeheartedly believe in. It’s something that I think is is missing from society, and I think it’s presented in a way that makes it palatable, almost consumable, to people that really haven’t looked at some of these things from that specific angle.

15:47
Right, i think it was a blessing.
15:51
Yeah, i think that was the brilliance of it.

16:56
Yes, sean, i think that was the brilliance of it, man, because when I watched the movie, you kind of need to know a little bit of your Bible to pick up some of the nuances. We definitely will talk about some of that as we go, man, because it jumped out but it wasn’t in your face. I thought I was listening to an interview, i think, with, maybe the producer, and he said, specifically the horror genre is so big right now. That was what they perceive as their avenue, their opportunity to get a message like this out there, because, man, this is what people are craving, this is what they’re going after. Literally, they didn’t know, when they sit down in their seats with their popcorn and their drink, that there’s a lot of spiritual elements, that just absolute truth would be hitting them in their face, man. So I’m sure that drew you to that script as well.
Sean Patrick Flanery

17:46
Well, i think there’s various messages on all fronts. I think if you live at the Vatican, i think you’re going to realize so many specific nuggets and nuances. I don’t think that’s necessary for my next door neighbor to look at it and go, wow, i’ve never seen it from that angle And that really makes a whole heck of a lot of sense. So I think it’s on every level. I can honestly say that Chuck and Kerry are two of the best writers I’ve ever worked with in the entire industry. I got my inauguration into Hollywood working with George Lucas and Spielberg and Young Indiana Jones, with some of the most amazing writers that are heralded today, and I’m not kidding, i think the best I’ve ever worked with are Chuck and Kerry. Every syllable in a script is there for a very specific reason, right.

Man that’s powerful. Just to know that, for instance, the enemy, the carpenter, the way that was used man for nonbelievers, i saw that as an opportunity to open up and have a conversation about the gospel if you’re there with people who may not connect in those dots. But it was just brilliantly laid throughout the film how you touched on that from that nefarious character.

I appreciate it Absolutely, absolutely. So how about? I loved it? There’s one line that I wanted to get your personal opinion on, because it was probably the most impactful line of the whole movie for me and guys. You got to go check it out and we’ll make sure we have links in the show notes where you can go rent it and support it 100 percent, and even the book that was behind it. So the scene where you said the cross was our greatest mistake. It was kind of a quick part too. You spent a lot of time there. When you read that line you were going through the script. How did that sit with you? That one line the cross was our greatest mistake.
Sean Patrick Flanery

19:52
You know I’ve been asked a number of these questions from specific lines and how it resonated with me. It’s no different than you know. I didn’t come into the script, as you know, this holy man who’s going to spout out everything that he feels and believes. Man, i read this script, i got to tell you And I myself made course corrections And that’s one of the reasons it’s like I feel like the more you go without, the further you stray, and it takes reading something like this that makes you go yeah, y’all, but wait a minute, flannery, you need to reassess and make a little adjustment yourself. You know, and that’s the greatest thing for me, you know saying a lot of these lines. You know I always equate it to.
20:51
You know, i tell a lot of my students because I teach Jiu Jitsu as well, and when I’m rattling off the details of hand placement and foot placement and hip rotation, a lot of times my inner monologue is like, flannery, you pull that off, but you leave that hip placement off the table as well. You need to adjust that in your own game. You know, i’m saying that to myself as I teach And I found myself doing the same thing. You know, because, in essence, you know, being an actor in a role like this. You’re part of it, as you’re being an educator, but part of me is hearing the words that I’m saying and making a confession to myself. Like dude, you need to listen up, deliver the line, but you need to listen as well to what you deliver.
Chris Grainger
Host
21:32
Amen to that man. I mean powerful lines for sure. How about the spiritual warfare? I’m sure there was a lot of things happening on the set. I heard some stories of things that were happening to directors and things like that. Did it impact you at all? Just the warfare of not trying to get this film created, because I know this is not one that the forces out there wanted to get done for sure?
Sean Patrick Flanery

21:56
You know there’s a lot of things that happened on set, but I can tell you that getting a film made there’s always roadblocks anyway. I can say that there were an unusually large amount of roadblocks with this, but if the content was different I wouldn’t have thought, whoa, something is afoot here. It’s back to scripture. You surround yourself with the armor of God, you go in with confidence. I didn’t have anything happen to me specifically that put my mind in a different place. I mean, i certainly knew the content that I was taking on and I spoke to God daily specifically about that and asked for specific protection.
22:54
I did in my journey. I drove out to set to Oklahoma where we shot myself. So just driving that many miles on a freeway and specifically to head out there to do this content certainly crossed my mind. I mean, i pray to God it continues. But I feel like I was adequately protected and I certainly didn’t have any odd hiccups, certainly not enough that would make me think something nefarious was at foot. If it was different content, i feel like he’s right there. So if anything did step up. He swatted away before it got near me.
Chris Grainger

23:37
Amen to that. I mean, it sounds like you mentioned armor of God. Man, if you have the armor of God there with you and you’re going into it, you have the protection. I think for me that was a big takeaway from the movie too is, as a believer, there’s nothing I need to worry about here. My big driver needs to be to share the good news with others so that they can be aware of these forces that are out there. I mean, that’s just legit, it’s real. I mean so it’s man. I just hats off to you.
24:06
I’m so glad to hear that nothing personally impacted you throughout that, but, man, it was again just one of the most impactful movies from a Christian even from a Christian standpoint I think I’ve ever seen, and I just can’t emphasize enough to guys you need to jump through this. I am curious. We’re not going to give it away because you guys need to go watch it. There was a lot of one-on-one with you and Jordan. How was that? Was that your first time working with him? Just curious, how did you guys form? Because it seemed like you had such a just an intimate connection throughout the entire film.

It was. It was my first time working with Jordan and I really didn’t know anything about him coming into the film. Like I said, i’d worked with Chuck and Kerry before, so they knew Right. He and I met Jordan and I’ll tell you, for actors this type of material normally most Thespians which I don’t really consider myself a Thespian would want to rehearse this over and over again for a month and go to weird places. I don’t really work like that and I’m very grateful that Jordan didn’t make it necessary for us to kill it with repetition.
25:28
I thought Jordan was amazing in this role. I honestly do, absolutely. I think he knocked it out of the park. I could not have dreamed to have as good a sparring partner as Jordan going into it knowing nothing about it. That’s another little actor lottery win. We shook hands and we did it, and the first day I was like wow, this guy is good, his work ethic is sound, there’s no idiosyncrasies, there’s no difficulties. As you hear, he’s just a regular dude with a good mindset and I think he knocked it out of the park. Man, i do.

I think he did too. I mean, just like I said, the chemistry seemed like it worked. Did I also either read or found something? Did he have a kid on day one of filming, or something like that?

On day one You know, he Day one, bro I read this film and he came out and he and I chatted and he wanted to do a rehearsal on the first day. We really went down into the business room at the hotel and we just talked for like two hours. We didn’t really rehearse any of the lines. He asked me what I wanted to do and I said I’d really rather not do it until the day We can talk about this script and he goes that’s okay, that’s okay. We really didn’t even run any lines, we didn’t even talk about the scenes, we just got to know each other And he told me his wife was pregnant and he told me that she’s nine months pregnant and I thought, wow. I said God bless you, brother. You came out here knowing that.
27:09
And on the first day of filming I remember before the first day of filming, the day before he went walking outside of the hotel to eat some spaghetti and in cursive, big on a brick wall, it says close CKY Rocky, and that’s the name that they had already chosen to give their boy. And so so many things happened that were like weird little signs. And the very next day when his car’s pulling into the prison. That’s when he got the phone call. Hey, you’re a daddy to a little baby boy, rocky Nice, and he facetime. And then he came to the set later because we had a scene later and he pulled me aside and he told me the news and I was a little bit ashamed that he was there to do a move Me. I felt kind of guilty, but man, it was, that’s crazy, man, what up. You’ll always remember that first day.

I think so. That’s going Man. You’ll never forget that, right, what an amazing story that he’ll be able to have with him and his wife. Well, she may not enjoy it so much, but I’m sure Rocky will. As he gets older, he can appreciate that, right, yeah, dad was working, man, dad was working. Yeah, well, i’m curious, man, on the feedback that you guys, specifically you. What type of feedback have you gotten from the movie, because you pushed on some very touchy areas, particularly the abortion scene. We’re not going to go through it with you guys those of you listeners you need to watch it, but that one bro crushed it. I’m curious have you gotten any feedback on negative feedback or positive feedback? What’s it been like since this drop?

Interesting little nugget My agents haven’t even seen the film. I haven’t even heard a word from my agents. If they did see it, they didn’t think it was worthy of sending me a message. The other option is they didn’t see it at all, but I haven’t heard anything from them. Now, with social media, feedback is pretty much. It’s easy and it’s guaranteed. So I have things ranging from hate mail, but it’s absolutely overwhelmed by appreciation and accolades and people complimenting me. It feels good, man, It feels good. There’s plenty of people that are reaching out, that are saying that it’s exactly what’s needed at a time like this. The amount of positive response I got to say that proportionally the amount of positive response surprises me. I would have thought there’d be far more people reaching out with vitriol than is currently in my inbox. There’s some negative stuff, but it’s far, far exponentially outweighed by the good.

Right. Well, that’s great. I mean your message hit home and I’m just thinking back through the film. One of the most heartbreaking was the area where the meal that they’re very towards the end of the film where he didn’t get the meal. But again this gives to the brains of the gift that God has given me with, from an acting standpoint, to be able to flip the switch that seems like seamlessly. I’m sure there are a lot of jump cuts and things like that, but, man, just tremendous of how you pulled that off to show the realities of the dark side. Were there any scenes that were harder than others from that standpoint?
Sean Patrick Flanery

30:38
You know it’s a weird question. If I say there weren’t hard scenes then it makes me sound kind of arrogant. But really no, you know, it’s beyond that with you. When a script is that well written, it’s like. you know. it’s like if you’re riding a train and you see somebody reading a book and you can see on their face that they’re going through emotions. their body is reacting in a way that they can’t control and they’re not even aware of what their body’s doing. They’re reading a story. That’s the way I am with scripts, and when it’s really well, i believe I’m not a method actor. I know it’s not really happening, but launching myself into that story, my body reacts for the story that Edward is throwing out of his mouth and it’s horrific and it’s damning and it’s alive and well and it’s painful to touch and all those things just kind of sort of happen And it’s. I don’t have to go to a dark place or anything, i just really read a well crafted, manicured script. That’s it, amen.

I love writing. I love writing and I moved out to LA to be a writer, believe it or not. I moved to a piece of children’s theater that thing that I went and I told my granddaddy about And writing took a backseat because an agent saw me and suggested she submit me for some commercials. and then I got some commercials, then she goes, let me submit for some theatrical, which means TV and movies, and I said, yeah, you know if it supplements my writing career. And the next thing I know is I was on a plane to go do Young and Anna Jones, which I’m grateful for. It’s opened up every door that’s opened me today. but I really moved out there to be a writer And the first novel that I published I had published in 2016 is actually it’s a prayer.
34:21
a whole book is a prayer. It’s a letter to God And it’s a lot of the elements in that book are things that I wanted preserved for my kids, in case a boulder ever fell on my head And it’s because I am in my office. This is the book. It’s called Jane to. It’s a love letter to my family my dad, my granddaddy, my mom, my mama and, obviously, the great state of Texas and fatherhood and the upbringing that got me to wear on today. I’m not saying that’s an amazing upbringing, but it’s. it’s certainly inclusive of the hiccups you know, the falls right, climb back to your feet, etc. And that’s. that’s one of the that’s also on the list of three things. that’s nefarious. I think it’s one of the most important projects that have been a part of right, as well as that book for things legacy that I’ll leave behind. Amen.

I mean and by the way, guys, he just gave a spoiler That is our book of the week this week, so head over to the website, get your copy of Jane to highly recommend that one. It’s had my copy on the way, so, man, love, love that. So I mean, so that is a premise, because I mean I’ve got it coming. I haven’t read it yet, so can you give us a little bit more about what’s going on there? So that’s a prayer that ultimately made me give us a little bit deeper insight to the overall theme of the book.

Yeah, it’s, it’s, it’s. I met a girl when I was eight years old to change everything I thought I understood about the planet Earth, and you know, you want to know about my testimony. I’ll tell you a little story. That’s going to sound completely outlandish and bizarre. Um, uh, i Horrible thing that I ever did.
36:25
I got peer pressured into having a fight on the golf course With a kid that knocked over my chocolate milk and he and I played football when we were six and this is you know. This is five years later and we marched out to the golf course and There was a. The golf course is in a richer neighborhood where I came from the other side tracks. When I say that I didn’t want for anything, i am the Bill Gates of family. My mom, my dad, my mom, my granddaddy were every sporting event, every punctual moment of my life, like I, i Warren Buffett of families, but we didn’t write a lot of them. But I wanted for nothing And we marched over there, the golf course, and I’m embarrassed to this. But There was what we called a green bean, a greenskeeper that would drive around a little green golf Cart and I would always see him because I had to cross this golf course to go to a swimming practice And I was a swimmer and I always see see him playing music and his little golf cart and driving around and he looked Kind of like Santa Claus. He was a big, old, robust, fat guy. And so we’re marching to the To to go to this kids house. I still know his name and And and we go up to.
37:39
We passed what I called the green bean and I heard him play in this song and I remember the song. We got to any, we didn’t think about it. We passed him. We got to the to the, to the, to the house, and we knocked on the front door. Nobody answered. So I thought, okay, thank God, let’s leave.
37:59
And the guy that was kind of leading a little older kid who was peer pressure me. He said no, no, no, no, we’ll go around the back because it’s on the golf course. Nobody had a fence, so we walk right around the back. When you knock on the sliding glass door and his mom comes to the door beaming that Four cool kids are coming for his son and this this leader guy goes hey, is Andy home? She’s like oh my god, he is. Some friends are here. Do you want some cake, would y’all like sandwiches? and my heart Shriveled up to the size of a small sun dried raisin. And Andy came walking down the stairs just Stoic and he’s like no mom will be right back, and walked outside. We all followed him to the hole and I I Long story short I got in a fight with, with, with, with this kid and I was just hoping that he would give up, and I’m I’m hitting him and.
38:56
His nose opened up, there’s blood all over my hand and I started to punch him with kind of an open, softer hand, just saying you got to quit, you got to quit. And You know, back back then I’ve always been a pretty emotional kid. I’m Crying my eyes out, even though he never touched me Right, he was one to through the first punch, but I don’t blame him because we were gonna fight me turn. He cracked me and then I, i, i, i Got him on the ground, i started hitting him and You know his face was all bloody and I, what if I was over? and he kind of went limp. I just got up and I got my books and everything and I ran crying on the other side of the golf course And I just sit down next to a big HVAC and there was a banana tree plant right there kind of covering the unit and, and Andy, i saw him walk to his side of the golf course to his house and the, the green bean pulled up, play in this song and Almost blocking me and Andy, and Andy kind of looked at me. He I don’t know how long you’ve been there, but he saw that I was like crying and I’m kind of watch, watch, kind of Moving these banana leaves trying to get the blood off my hands, and I was pretty upset and this, this green bean, was standing there looking at me just doing this, looking at me with all the disgust in the world, and I heard him playing the same song and I have a homework pages right down there Right, and there was always a guy named Samir that worked at the 7-eleven, who he was a No, no friend of mine. He was an adult, but I would. He always used to play records and if anybody and he’s even tried to cope bottle you get a nickel, you could go get some candy and I would always go in there and ask him about songs and and so. So if there was a song, it’s our wrote the lyrics to this song down the part that it was playing, and After Andy had left and I wrote the lyrics down and and on your homework pages back then, at the top in the heading, you had to Write your name, the date, the school name and the subject name.
41:09
Always right the name, the date, the school name and the subject name every single day. So in my binder, sequentially, it would be, for example, july of, you know, march 3rd, march 4th, march 5th, and that was a Friday. So then 6, 7, and then March 8th, march 9th, march 10th, it’s all sequential, the dates. Nothing changes in the hitting your homework. So I wrote these lyrics down and after that fight, you know, i Few days later I went to the 7-eleven and I asked Samir, i said, and the, the words that I had written down are Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn?
41:49
the minutes two hours. And This was, this was. I Don’t know if anybody understands those lyrics, but it’s a Gordon Lightfoot song, it’s the name of the song is the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. And I still go back to those homework pages today To look at those dates. Right, and I’m gonna sound like an absolute moron when I tell you this, but that ship didn’t go down until two months after I wrote those down.
42:24
I Can’t explain it.
42:27
I Can’t explain it for the life of me, but it’s on those homework pages today. And if you want, if you want to know something that re Set my whole spiritual clock. It was right. Still to this day, it doesn’t make sense. I Have to think, and I’ve thought some pretty bizarre scenarios to make me understand it. Like, yeah, when you see a science fiction movie and somebody plugs in their head and gives them different memories, i thought, right, did somebody give me a different memory? maybe, and it’s just a memory. But I have the homework pages, i Have them and there’s still what looks brown now, but it was a little blood thumbprint from the homework pages the day that the fight happened. Right, i can’t explain it for the life of me, for the life of me, because the Edmund Fitzgerald was still floating when I wrote it down and I don’t have an answer. Man, i don’t have an answer. But if you want to know why I wrote it and why I wrote a series of letters that are in that book, it’s because of that. It’s because of that.

Absolutely man for sure, and now kind of on a little Like a tangent, a little bit of a tangent here with this one, but you mentioned that fight that you had there with with that gentleman But also know you have a big passion you talked about it earlier in this episode as well on your passion for teaching martial arts. You know what would kind of led you to that? because maybe my family we started this year taking BJJ and Karate and that’s I have a 12 year old, 11 year old, and I have two little. I have a 22 month old and a seven month old, so I’m my older girls. That’s like you know what it’s time to. It’s time to be more intentional about this.
44:39
So we started BJJ karate. I’m doing it with them, my wife is doing it as well. I love it. I mean, my belt is glowing white though, bro, so it’s not like you know you’re talking to a BJJ pro here, but I just can tell you it’s impacted us. But what’s, what was your passion for? what led you to your passion for martial arts? And you know why you still take such, you know such a serious part of your life with that.

You know, a lot of people Sight a story about Bruce Lee that got him into martial arts. Mine was Elvis. Really, i saw him doing The suspicious minds on the Vegas right, all in a trap, our camel, and he would throw these kicks. And I Was a big Elvis fan and I and I had seen in a magazine that he studied Some form of karate with Ed Parker, the old man, kimpo karate, okay, and I asked my parents if I could do that and there was one that ended up Next to a pig, lee Wiggly, in a strip mall and asked my dad if I could do it. And they, you know, we, they worked at a deal where I could, you know, help clean the mats and whatnot and get some free. It ended up being a mcdojo. It was a complete, you know, kind of one of the nonsensical martial arts. But that’s how I got into it. Now, no, okay, i why did I have an interest in it? Because I didn’t like. I was always a smaller kid, like even now. I’m no giant, i’m probably Above average, but I’m I’m 511. I’m only 170 pounds. I’ve never been a really big guy and I’ve always, i’ve always had an inability, to my own fault, to let stuff go. I just I didn’t like people putting pressure on me and implying that they were gonna force me to do something I didn’t wanna do. And I knew that I got nervous and I knew I didn’t like that feeling And for me to give something to my kids, it’s realistically. I feel like it’s this way.
46:40
You know, in teaching martial arts, every now and then I come across an adult who will be a brand new student And we’ll talk about like, why’d you get into martial arts? What made you wanna come and train jujitsu? And you know, have you ever been in a fight? Did you ever? and very rare occasion you’ll come across a guy that’s like no, i’ve never been in a fight. And you kind of try not to go what? But really, inside you’re going.
47:06
So you say have you ever had to hit somebody? No, never hit anybody. You hold that back. So have you ever been hit in the face? No, never.
47:17
And honestly, the only way that can happen is if you’ve remained on your bar stool your entire life, because there are moments in every 30 day period where you’re forced to stand up and say you know what. That’s not gonna happen, the only way you go through life without ever having a physical confrontation, is if you stay seated and you’re like well, i’m not gonna contest that, i’m not gonna contest that. I’m not gonna contest that either, and I don’t want my kids to do that. I don’t want anybody to have to go through life with their whole self-defense system as hope. I don’t want your fingers to be crossed in hopes that somebody doesn’t violate a friend or a loved one in a way that you don’t seem fit. I don’t want that. I don’t like it. I didn’t like it. For me And I think you have there is a necessity to have the ability to be violent, but to have the ability to contain it and only use it when necessary.
48:08
But I promise you there is gonna be a moment in every child’s life more often than not it’s a male’s life exponent of 20, that the will is gonna be tested And I’m telling you a bent will. maybe you can pop a dent or two out, but eventually it’s gonna break And a child will be irreparably damaged from having a will that’s been folded so many times. it’ll crack in it.
Chris Grainger

48:33
That’s right, man. I know so many guys out there and I’ve been one of them too. We just think that you know what. Well, in that moment everything’s gonna turn red and I’m just gonna go off. But I’m like, no bro, i want some training. I wanna be ready in those moments, because I’ve seen my daughters now going through BJJ and they’re putting submissions from behind and they have to get out, and now they’ve been choked and it’s like all right, this is muscle memory, we’re teaching you. So if that moment happens when you get to be a teenager in college or something like that it’s not gonna be the first time You’ll naturally know how to move that. So it’s like I’m with you, man, you gotta train your children. You have to take that in particular, because there’s a lot of violence out there and you have to be prepared. So I mean hats off to you for doing that.

I don’t think it’s any different. You know, you won’t find a parent out there that doesn’t agree that your child should know math. You won’t find a parent out there that doesn’t agree. My child needs to learn how to read. Well, what about self-defense? I mean to me reading, writing, arithmetic, a knowledge of history, a knowledge of civics and also self-defense. And I’ll add another one How dare you put a child into the world that can’t swim? So they’re gonna just cross their fingers if they go on a boat and they fall off.

Amen to that, man for sure. I mean even more self-skills we’re talking about with our kids. We’re teaching them farming, we’re teaching them working with hands, we’re teaching them things and they’re not learning school because, buddy, you need to know how to do these things to be self-sufficient. I mean, if you’re relying on a grocery store every week for your survival, you don’t know how to do anything with your hands. Man, you’re susceptible. So we have a little farm we’re doing stuff to. Sounds like you got some land there in Texas. I’m sure you’re trying to incorporate some of those skills as well.

Man, i’m an amateur at life. I really am, and I can say that kind of daily. I have revelations on things that, ah man, if I knew, even a day ago, a month ago, a year ago, five years ago, and I’m older now and I can look back and hindsight’s, 20, 20. But you do realize that pretty much everything good in my life has been based on my decision to endure everything, everything good. At one point I thought about stopping every single thing good. I thought about should I really do this? Right? It’s crazy.
52:14
It’s the term adversity. It’s such a necessary component in your life And when you’re young, your soul navigation process is to steer away from it. When you’re an adult, you say, okay, i wanna steer toward it, but in a controlled situation. And you build up not only a physical immunity but you build up a psychological immunity. The more you force yourself into these situations that test you And that first you go. I promised I was gonna do this, but maybe just today I’ll set it out Right. Getting yourself to a position where you’re incapable of saying no is paramount to the good future. It just really is. It sounds like such a cliche sports line, but, man, the decision to endure, and the more you make those decisions, the better your life is. And family, it’s the majority of every lesson in my life. You know I always make a joke, it’s you know.
53:23
People will say you know, oh, it’s really great that Sean was there to hold his kids’ hands. Man, i’ll be here to tell you they were sent here to hold mine. Right, they hold my hand every single day. They make me infinitely better than I was before they got here, and I didn’t do that. It’s somebody walks in the door that changes everything about you, right? And man, if you don’t give yourself an opportunity to see those walk in the door, i promise you whatever you thought before then like, well, you know, i don’t know about, i just don’t know. I don’t know if it’s right for me. Man, trust me, it is the most impactful thing in anybody’s life that I know of, and it all started with me and my wife.
54:15
You know, and being in this with a like-minded individual, if there is anything advice I can give to young dudes out there, choose wisely. You know you make a list to go to the grocery store. Make a list of the questions that you want to ask the future possible mother of your kids. Leave nothing off the table. Make sure you guys are going in the right direction. If anybody ever tells you you know it’s conceivable that you know somebody with this political could marry this and raise kids no, they cannot. Your politics are the structure of your rule system. They are the way you’re going to guide your life. They are the greed upon rules of how you will conduct yourself every single day. What is allowed and what is not allowed, i don’t care who tells you that it’s gonna be okay. It will not be okay. Make sure you were on the same page and make the criteria for selecting it something other than wow, nice rat Amen.

My favorite hobby. about questions. I mean, if you’ve taken my boys out of the equation, it’s jujitsu. I mean, that is my, it is my priestly church, it is my sanctuary, it is my therapist’s couch. It does all of those things for me and it does it on a consistent basis. I’ve been training now for 24 years. It is a huge part of my life. This here is my retired black belt. I no longer use that one. I train every day in this one that looks more refreshing. So it is a huge part of my life. Like here’s a, here are my boys’ belts. Nice When I say it’s right next to me. at all aspects of my life it is. Jujitsu is my hobby and it cleanses me physically, spiritually, emotionally, psychologically, and it is something that I can do with the entire family. It is my number one hobby And second place really isn’t close.
56:45
But also having said, that if it doesn’t evolve my family, my kids, it’s not really a part of my life.
56:52
You know the big part of being a dad is you gotta make the decision of when to do things for your kids versus when to do things with your kids. And now I try to minimize how often I leave to go be able to afford to do things for them. And I’ve recalculated to where I just leave enough, enough, leave often enough to provide them with enough, because it’s time that is so much more important. You know, i don’t need to leave anything to them, i need to leave it in them And I need time for that. I can’t spend all my days away earning money to where I can leave them an inheritance. The inheritance is gonna be here.

Man usually some kind of a smoothie, whether it’s an acai fruit, spinach smoothie with some easily digestible protein powder, but I try to eat clean.
58:07
I am a big believer of whatever you preach. If you wanna save the whales, well, you can save more whales if you’re here longer to save more whales. I am kind of a fitness bigot If anybody is preaching what they wanna do good in the world. But look my foundation. We have a 501c3, it’s called the thank you letter. The reason it’s called the thank you letter is because every single day we do four things in my kid’s program We eat good, we sleep good, we train our body, we train our mind. That’s it.
58:37
And when I mean eat good, i mean eat good. I don’t mean like, well, i didn’t have any pepperoni on my pizza. I mean eat good, sleep good, really sleep good, go to a better, to good hour. And I mean don’t just sleep but get rest. You can say, well, i slept eight hours, but did you rest for eight hours? Train your body and train your mind. Same thing.
58:56
So many parents insist that their kid go to school, but their kid is morbidly obese. If you want my opinion, i think you’re a crappy parent If you allow your child to abuse their body. You are allowing your child to live 10 years less than they could if they just paid attention to a diet. I really stand behind that and I believe it. And whatever you wanna do good in the world, it has to go through this vessel.
59:25
Some people, even if they don’t believe in God, if you think that we’re all here because two rocks collided, which I think is laughable but if you do, you owe those two rocks a thank you letter, and your thank you letter for this life is only ever going to be what you do with this life, and if you put a wedge in it and become morbidly obese, your thank you letter is in the face, and shame on you. We write a thank you letter to God with our behaviors, not with our words. With our behaviors, every single day, we say thank you for this life, and our thank you letter entails us taking care of it, and taking care of it Right, right.

So, thinking about God what’s your favorite thing about it, man? I know you’ve talked about your relationship with God throughout it. What’s your favorite thing about God?

01:00:29
It’s confidence and peace. in an uncertain world, you’re presented with a finite amount of time. And I’ll tell you, if you ever read Victor Franco’s book, hope is the only thing that kept him going. It’s in man’s search for meaning. It is true. A life without hope is where you start doing stupid things. If there is no reason to do right, if there is no bigger picture, then what does it matter if you bludgeon your body? What does it matter if you sleep with 5,000 people? What does it matter? You have to have a reason. There’s got to be something bigger than this And for me, my favorite thing is it gives me a sense of peace that there is something far greater and far more important than just me.
01:01:30
Big part is taking the self and throwing it away and saying here I am, how do we do this? And throwing all of those internal desires and motivations out the window. And there’s something bigger. and I’ll tell you you can’t fake that sense of calm and peace. You can’t fake it. You know it’s there for a reason. You know it’s not because I artificially believed in something. There is something that makes you do this, it makes you go. yeah. And if you don’t have that in your life. man go, look at me.

Sean Patrick Flanery

01:02:22
You know, regardless of what you read about, you know heaven and hell and Satan. It’s going kind of back to the thank you letter, you know, and us conducting our daily lives in a way that says thank you for this gift of life. You know, i always go back to this image of hell where you’re on your deathbed and incomes the version of you that you could have been if you’d have made right choices. And I know, if I saw that person it’s not going to look exactly like me, but I’m trying in the later stages of my life to live up to every bit of potential Because I promise you, if you live your life and you’ve affected three people in a positive way, that’s great. But you probably could have affected five or seven or 10 or 50 or 100.
01:03:30
And I know I’ve wasted time on my youth and I know I’ll never live up to 100% of my potential, but I’m damn sure doing my best to do it. And I don’t want to meet a dude who’s unrecognizable. I don’t want to meet somebody who’s that and they’re like that was you If you just started to pay. I don’t want it to be unrecognizable. I want to recognize something That is a hell of another order of hell magnitude altogether And I want to go. I’m not exactly like that, but I’m close, but I’m close.

Man. You know, if there’s anything that I hope people can take away, it’s. You know it’s. Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian anymore than standing in a garage makes you a car. And I used to go to the church and I used to recite things that it’s almost like a song lyric, that you sang that song a hundred times And then when you’re 40, you listen to it and you go oh, i’m actually listening to the words now, And it’s not just some nonsensical love song, it’s about something far bigger, better and greater.
01:05:05
You know, i think if somebody would have pointed that out to me, out of focus, a little earlier, you know it’s so. I think it’s just. If anybody can take anything away, it’s it’s look a little harder, a little longer and a little deeper, because the good stuff’s never on the surface, man. It does require a little digging, and I wish somebody would have handed me a shovel a little earlier and said no, you’re not there yet, man, you’re not there yet.
01:05:32
These are these emotions that you don’t realize. You’re just going through them, and maybe outsiders don’t, because you’re saying the right words, you’re going to the right places, right? You know, i was lost for a long time, man, even though it wouldn’t appear to the outside. So just you know, and you know when it happens, man, you know when it happens There’s a clarity that is incomparable to the. You know, if you’re 29, there’s one day, one day of clarity when you’re 29 that supersedes 28 days and three, 28 years and 364 days of clarity is pale as a person, to that one moment, and when it hits you you go yeah, copy that, copy that.

Man, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. and all of my students wear it and they rock it and hopefully the message is seeping in. But one of them is the Jiu Jitsu heirloom and our 501c3. that I explained earlier is called the thank you letter And it is what it sounds like. It is our daily lives to make sure that it is an adequate and sufficient thank you letter for the gift we’ve been given.
