In this episode:
Ever grappled with the profound impact of fatherlessness on society and the transformative role Christian men can play in this scenario?
We tackle this challenging issue head on, referencing Romans 8:15 to illuminate our discussion. As we delve deeper, we inspire you to embrace the spirit of adoption that God bestows upon believers. The call to surrender to Jesus creates a space for change and influence, and we invite you to join us in making a difference.
The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, 'Abba Father.' Click To Tweet Romans 8:15
Welcome to the Lion Within Us, a podcast serving Christian men who are hungry to be the leaders God intends you to be. I’m your host, chris Granger. Let’s jump in. All right, guys, it’s your spiritual kickoff of the week and I am excited to be here with you again. Looking forward to digging into God’s Word together is what it’s all about, fellas.
So right now, we’re going to be in the book of Romans this week. Okay. So book of Romans, chapter eight. Just looking at one verse, though, chill out Verse 15, okay. Verse 15 says for you have not received the spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons and daughters, by which we cry out Abba, father. Yeah, this verse is so impactful, it’s such a meaningful verse. Obviously, the book of Romans is just absolutely incredible.
So let’s just dig in. Let’s see how we can simplify and apply this. Okay, first of all, we need to know where is the book of Romans. We’re not going to take anything for granted here to line with this. So you need to go to your New Testament Gospels. You got Matthew, mark, luke and John, okay. Then you’ll get to the book of Acts and then you get to Romans. So that’s how you find it. Okay If you, if you, as soon as you go past Acts, you get to Romans. Okay. So if you get to 1 Corinthians, you went too far back up a little bit. So, again, one of my favorite books in the Bible. It just has a way of hitting me right where I need it, right Exactly when I need it as well, just with absolute truth.
So we’re going to unpack this scripture together and I really want us to think about an issue that we’re going to be addressing this entire week on the line with Dennis, and it’s an issue that doesn’t get enough attention, particularly from the pulpit and the churches, and that’s fatherlessness. Okay, so you guys have heard me saying over and over again on the show that the root issue that I see, particularly in society what’s going on in many others, you know so far as other countries and parts of the world is fatherlessness. Okay, because I can see it. In fact it’s having all around me and I know I can tell you guys firsthand. I see it. I serve with the children and I’ve been doing that a lot in the children’s department for years, and the church is not immune to this. It’s not Next time you’re in a church service, just scan or look around, just take a look and see how many quote unquote boys are there and they don’t have any men in their life.
They’re not there. It’s absolutely staggering, it’s unacceptable. And we have to remember, fellas, that you can’t for the least bit outsource being a father, because that impact is tremendous. So it’s nothing you can outsource, just like we can’t outsource a spiritual leader, being a pastor for our children. You’d have to be that spiritual leader. You can’t outsource that, fellas.
And too often these young men in particular have no say in those situations that they have right, they’re just there. But because of the sin nature that we have in this world, that’s just what they find themselves in. Maybe their earthly father isn’t around. Sometimes earthly fathers die, right, and that’s unfortunate. And when that happens, guys, we have to be able to turn to God’s Word. We have to be able to look them and help them and serve them and see what God says to ultimately get those young men to where they need to be to be effective citizens, to be effective soldiers for Christ.
So we’re going to be digging into this verse right here. We’re going to look at this together, guys, because when I started I’m packing this verse. It jumped out to me. It’s like you know, for you have not received a spirit of slavery and I was like, wait a minute, for you have not received a spirit of. And I say wait a minute. If I went to Timothy second, timothy one seven, we all know this verse, for God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of what power, love and a sound mind or self control, whatever version of your Bible is. So we know that, that, under circumstances that we have of this world, that that spirit of slavery is not from the Lord. Right, it’s not because that spirit of slavery leads to fear and fear is not from the Father. Okay, because what is said right here, you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear. Again, why? Because that’s not from the Father. The only fear, guys, that a Christian should ever have is the fear of the Lord. That’s because he is holy, he is righteous, he is good. And, quite frankly, we are not. We’re not.
For young people in the situation, followlessness is easy, very easy to slip down that trap of living in fear and not trusting others. You know this guy never, he never shows up for me. I can’t count on people, I can’t rely on people. I’m going to do it myself, right, and I’m telling you. That’s real, that’s not right. So the best way we can combat this fellas is to build trust. You build trust by keeping your word, following up and doing what you said you’re going to do. I’m telling you what you can quickly. The things that people have robbed, the fatherlessness people of, can be built up if we just show up, if we just do it, and if we do that and we’re consistent, it’s amazing the power that’s going to have.
Now look at the second part of this verse, because the second part of this verse is absolutely beautiful. You have received the spirit of adoption of sons and daughters, by which we cry out I’ll be a father. And I start thinking about this verse here because once you surrender to the Lordship of Jesus right, we are now at that moment sons and daughters of the King, don’t miss that. That means there’s not a single person, not a single person on this planet right now, guys, that is, without a father. It’s not because once they surrender to the Lordship of Christ, they’ve been adopted.
And it’s so crucial for us, particularly when we’re trying to share with others that are walking through this particular scenario because this void in their life is real, and too many times we try to paint over this brush and be like, no, this is okay, you’re fine, we’re not going to worry about that, it’s not going to find you At the end of the day, fellas, we need to validate the wounds. We can say, you know what? No, this is not the way it’s supposed to be. And it’s okay for you to be mad, it’s okay for you to hurt. And we need to say if we help them recognize that and deal with that, then guys, then we can help them in healing.
So if we dig deeper into this verse, I wanted to look at the true meaning of the word Abba Because it was interesting to me. A couple of the resources that I was doing to study this verse just jumped out. And when you hear the word Abba, it’s most people think of daddy or dad right. And there are many youngsters across the world in other countries they use that interpretation and when they use this word, they’re talking to their dad right. But when you actually dig deep and you see what the root word itself means, it means father, I will obey you. I will obey you.
So think about that for a second, guys. Why doesn’t desire us to have that spirit of fear in our lives? We’ve already talked about that, right, right, we don’t have that because we’re his sons and we’re his daughters, and ultimately, that should drive us to love him completely and have that deep desire, because we love him, to obey him. That obedience is where it’s at. So for those out there who don’t have that earthly father, this could be huge, absolutely huge, as we’re in it today.
Fellas, we need to recognize one thing Children need structure, children need rules, no matter how much they think they don’t. Okay, they need it and we need to recognize ourselves that we have a heavenly father and he loves us and we need to adjust our actions to obey him. Right, and when we do that, everything changes, guys. Everything changes. At that point, he’s directing us, he’s taking a number one place in our life. He is it. There’s no one else in front of him. That’s it. We finally put him in the right place, okay?
So if you know young people right now that are going through this issue of fatherlessness, you got to point scripture like this out to them. You got to help them. See, you can’t just sit on sidelines, share these scriptures, okay, help them see that not only God loves them, but they are adopted into his kingdom, they’re adopted to his kingdom, and then show them firsthand, from a Christian man standpoint, what it means to obey the father. Because if you take these little steps, guys, these little bitty steps of obedience, they will make huge impacts in the lives of these young people. They will because, at the end of the day, all of a sudden, these young people who are dealing with this fatherlessness are going on. I just know who they are as a person, but they’re going to know who they are as adopted sons and daughters of the most high king, because they’re earthly father situation.
Let’s just be real, guys. None of you can change any of that for any of them, unless you’re listening and you’re wanting to, dance is walked out. You can change something, you can go back, you can repent, you can ask for forgiveness and you can work toward reconciliation. But let’s say for those out there who don’t have that opportunity, we can’t change that right, but we can do. We can cling tight to absolute truths like this that we see in scripture. We can right. We can use scripture like this often and effectively because we’re being intentional about sharing good news with others.
If that was, we talk a lot about unleashing the line with Dan and people like what does that mean? What does it? How do I do that? I have obedience out of time of what God doing, what God has called you to do, and when you know what you’re supposed to do and you don’t do it, that’s disobedience. That’s just as bad as doing the wrong thing, right.
So, guys, if you know God’s calling you, if you know guys is open, working on your heart, take it out there and help that young man who doesn’t have a dad at home. Maybe he’s living with his grandparents, right, or it’s a single mom, right, and she’s doing the best she can. But let’s just be real. Women can’t raise young men and teach them to be men. They just can’t. Just like I have three daughters, I can’t teach them to be women, right, my wife has to do that. She can’t teach my son to be a man. I have to do that. We need to recognize there is a gap. It’s okay that to talk, to talk to these kids directly about it, but then step in and help them recognize who’s they are and then start filling that gap. That’s what it’s all about.
So the question I want you to think about this week, guys how can you you, not someone else how can you support those impacted by fatherlessness? Because there’s action you can take. You know, it is May not be easy, may not be comfortable, it may take a little bit of effort and intentionality. But if you took that action, imagine to impact it. What happens someone else’s life. Just think about that for a second.
So, guys, again, I Don’t want to just brush over this issue of fatherlessness. We are all sons and daughters of the king and if we’ve been going through all this, this spiritual kickoff, and you’re still here listening, and you’ve never surrendered your life to the Lordship of Christ, this won’t give you a chance. Today, we guys aligned with Dennis, at the end of the day, yes, we want to help man, be the leaders God intends in the beat. That is definitely what we have been called to do. We also want to save people and if you don’t have that personal relationship of Christ, if you’ve never surrendered your life to the Lordship of him and you’re listening to this podcast for some reason, today’s your day. Don’t go another day walking in the darkness, because that’s what you’re doing right now? You’re walking in the darkness. I’d encourage you, step it, take a step forward into the light. And it’s first.
It’s very simple you need to understand and admit that you are a sinner. You’re a sinner in need of a savior, right? You don’t need a coach, you don’t need someone patting on your back, you don’t need someone just coming alongside. You can do this, buddy. No, your sinner need a savior. There’s nothing you can do for all sin and fall short of glory of God. There’s I’m sorry, fellas there’s nothing you can do. And we have to reach that point of brokenness to understand that. Okay, I can’t do this on my own. If I can’t work my way in, what do I do? That? That admission is the very first part, and then comes the beautiful part.
You have to believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that he came on that rescue mission from heaven for you, for me, for the entire world. Think about that for a second. Jesus got up from heaven and came down to earth. Live the perfect life Was the perfect sacrifice for our sin, and our sin is nothing more than something that separates us from God. That’s it. And he was to perpetuation for our sins. That’s just simply the payment that satisfies. So we can’t buy our way in right? There’s no golden ticket to get into heaven.
How do you do it? You surrender your life to the Lordship of Christ. I believe in Believing he is the Son of God, that he went on that cross, he died for you, he went in that tomb. He came out three days later. So we worship a living Savior, that he ascended to the Father and it says right there, guys, there’s no other name has been given among men about which we must be saved. It’s Jesus, that’s it.
So once you believe that I mean truly believe that in your heart, you have to confess him as Lord. That means stop stopping for a second and saying you know what I get? It Get. This is what I’ve been missing, and and I can’t keep doing this this way. So, god, I want to do it your way. I Surrender to you, I get my life to you. Wherever you take me, I’ll be obedient. I Believe you and I love you.
So if you ready to take that step right now, let’s just pray together a simple prayer. So follow whoever’s listening. If they’re ready to take that step of obedience, they’re ready, they reached that point. God, the tired, they’re hurting, they’re lonely, they don’t know which way to go. I, and for some reason, they’re listening to my voice and I just pray that, as they’re accepting you as their Savior right now, that you just give them peace, you give them encouragement, you give them hope, and I also pray you put people in their life that’s going to help them continue now, from this moment forward, growing closer to you. We love you, jesus. I just know the power of the cross. We thank you so much for your son, jesus, who died on the cross for us. I just pray for that one person right now, that one person, because the tears are running down their face. They’re ready to turn it over to you. I pray they take that action. I pray that according to your will and Jesus’ name, amen, alright, so if you just accept the Christ as your Savior, I want to hear from you. Just send me an email, chrisatthelionwithinus. I would love to hear from you. I want to send you some free resources to help you along your way, because you’re in the battlefield. You are, it’s okay. You’re not alone. You’re not alone. We’re here to help.
So I’d love to get your feedback, guys, on what you taught about the episodes that are coming up this week, particularly around followlessness. This is going to be some heavy stuff that we’re talking about, but it’s important. You know scripture like this, topics like this, they’re not preached about a lot. It can be controversial, I get it. It can be uncomfortable, but the last time I checked, guys, we weren’t called to be comfortable, we just weren’t. I’m not telling everyone of you guys have to be an alpha, omega, sheep dog out there and pushing agendas down People’s throat. No, by him telling you, you got to stand up for what’s right, you got to take a stance for something. And, standing on the word of God, I don’t know any better place to stand. So if you see an opportunity to make an impact this week, do it. Don’t take it for granted. Don’t think that someone else should do that on it, particularly if you have an opportunity to impact this issue of fatherlessness directly.
So come back on Wednesday, guys, hang out with us. We’ve got a great conversation coming up. You’re going to really like this one, I promise you. If you’re a man who is looking for greater spiritual guidance into how to be a better leader, finding resources that you can trust, never mind implementing, can be daunting For me personally. I thought it was a lost cause, so I decided to take action because I knew that I couldn’t be alone. That’s why we created the Lion Within Us community, and the areas that we’re helping other Christian men grow in are incredible. For instance, we built easy ways for guys to lean in and grow through fun events like our daily spiritual kickoff, where you’ll get that much needed boost directly from God’s Word. Our Bible studies that focuses on how to simplify and apply God’s Word to our life, and even our amazing forum where you can speak your mind without fear of getting shut down or or judged by the extreme rules of modern-day social media.
On top of all that, we knew that many men won’t help overcoming issues and becoming stronger in many different areas. That’s why we created semester mind groups where their iron truly sharpens to iron. Really, our community is all about having a growth mindset. It’s about accountability, intentionality and transparency. In other words, just leave Fakie at home and come into the community just as you are. I fully believe in what we’ve built.
