From the Swamp to the Scriptures: Why Faith Means Stepping First, Not Seeing First

Growing up in the South, he was one of my childhood heroes—and the first time I saw him live, I was hooked. Lately, I’ve been thinking about his song “The Legend of Wooley Swamp” and the line that hits so hard:
“I just had to find out for myself.”

In the song, the legend of Lucius Clay was too wild to believe, so the character heads back to the swamp to uncover the truth firsthand. That desire for proof—it runs deep in all of us. And if we’re honest, it can become a real stumbling block in our walk with Christ.

I think about Thomas after the resurrection. He gets a bad rap for doubting, but honestly? I get it. I can relate to wanting to see before I step.

Maybe that’s why Jesus calls us to childlike faith. When my kids listen to my instruction and choose to obey, they’re not being naive—they’re being trusting. They believe the instruction comes from love, so they respond with action.

As I look back on my own discipleship journey, most of my struggles came when I was chasing understanding instead of walking in obedience. I wanted confirmation when what I really needed was courage.

So here’s a question worth asking today:
Where in your life are you waiting for proof instead of listening for direction from the Holy Spirit?
And once you know the answer… What are you going to do about it?

My encouragement? Take the step—even if you can’t see it all yet.
