For too long, I took my relationship with Jesus too casually.
I loved thinking of Him as my friend — walking with me, riding shotgun on the adventures life threw my way. Somewhere along the line, though, I softened Him into a supporting character instead of recognizing Him as the sovereign King. I was inviting Him into my plans rather than surrendering to His will.
And then I wondered why I was always worn out.
Eventually, I began to see a hard truth: if Jesus is not Lord, someone else is. And most of the time, that “someone” was me — along with all the fear, control, striving, and self-condemnation that come with it.
Oddly enough, one of the clearest reminders of this came through a simple children’s song — Jesus Loves Me. My kids still sing it when we’re apart and catch up on the phone at the end of the day. If it’s been a while since you’ve heard it, here’s how it begins:
Jesus loves me, this I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
Those words are comforting. They remind us that His love is real, steady, and unearned. It doesn’t fluctuate with our performance. It isn’t something we achieve. It’s secure.
But it was the next lines that began to land differently for me:
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.
“To Him belong.”
Three simple words that speak directly to His sovereignty.
For years, I heard them as poetic. Now I hear them as positional. We belong to Him — not the other way around. He is not attached to our agenda. We are attached to His kingdom.
Here’s the reframe many men desperately need:
You are not in control — and that’s okay.
In fact, it’s good news.
You were never designed to carry the weight of defining yourself, redeeming your past, or securing your future. That belongs to the One who sits on the throne.
When you’re exhausted…
When you feel beaten down…
When the past keeps whispering that you’re disqualified…
You don’t need a better argument.
You need a better King.
And you have one.
Jesus loved you enough to go to the cross on your behalf. He rose victorious. He reigns today. And He has promised not just forgiveness, but renewal — a future where all things are restored and brought into glory with Him forever.
That’s not wishful thinking.
That’s royal decree.
