Beyond “If you… then I…” – Embracing the Promise of “No Matter What, I Do.”
As I sit here staring at my wedding ring, I’m reminded—and so grateful—that it represents a covenant, not a contract.
Follow me for a second. Imagine that back when I was dating my wife, on the night I proposed, instead of dropping to one knee, I slid a legal document across the table for her to sign.
Now what might that “contract” have included? I’m glad you asked…
Maybe it would’ve laid out conditions like:
- A warm dinner must be prepared every night.
- I am entitled to maintain three hobbies at all times, regardless of cost or time.
- And oh, let’s not forget a clause limiting any weight gain post-wedding to no more than 10 pounds.

Now, you might be laughing—and you should—but seriously, how often do we treat our marriages like contracts?
It’s the old “If you… then I…” mentality:
- If you do the dishes, then I’ll plan a date night.
- If you clean the house, then I’ll give you some attention later.
It’s a subtle trap, but one many of us fall into.
The good news? A simple shift in mindset changes everything.
Move from thinking “contract” to embracing “covenant.”
That changes the dynamic entirely. It goes from:

To: - “No matter what, I do.”
That’s the heart of God’s design for marriage—a covenant between one man and one woman, for life. It’s not performance-based. It’s promise-based.
