I can’t bench press a Buick… but man, it sure would be cool if I could.
I’ve always been fascinated by those guys in the World’s Strongest Man competitions — moving massive weights, flipping tires bigger than cars, carrying logs like toothpicks. Absolute beasts.
But this year, I learned what it feels like to not be strong.
One week I was running 5Ks six days a week. The next week, the surgeon said, “No running until January.” Just like that, everything stopped. The progress, the rhythm, the physical outlet I depended on — gone.
So when I get the all-clear to start running again, how do you think that’ll go? About as good as me trying to bench press that Buick. But does that mean I never start again? Absolutely not.
Because progression and pursuit are part of the process.
And that got me thinking — it’s the same in our walk with Christ.
I meet guys all the time who say they want to lead their families better, grow deeper in their faith, or live out their beliefs at work — but when we peel back the layers, the reps just aren’t there.
You can’t run a 5K without running that first mile. And you can’t become a spiritually grounded leader just by wishing it.
It takes work. Intentionality. Consistency.
That means digging into God’s Word daily — wrestling with it, praying through it, and taking it to the Father with every question, concern, and praise. It looks like praying with your spouse even when you’re tired, leading your family devotions even when you don’t feel ready, and being the prayer warrior your home needs.
Those World’s Strongest Men didn’t just show up on film day and start lifting boulders — they trained for years. Quietly. Daily. Consistently.
And that’s exactly how we build spiritual strength.
So as we close out this year, take some time to reflect. What’s gotten soft? Where do you need to put in some spiritual reps again?
Lay out a plan. Pick up the weight. And start moving forward.
If you need someone to help you map it out or just want a brother to talk through it with, hit reply. Let’s connect.
Remember – every day is a chance to move forward — let’s not waste a single one.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a Buick to rep.
