I’ve been there — done the whole New Year’s resolution thing more times than I can count.
Usually, it’s health-related, and I’m trying to use the start of the year to course-correct.
Some of those goals worked… others fizzled out faster than leftover Christmas cookies.
When I look back, I notice something: the goals that didn’t last always lacked a deeper tie to significance.
Take the classic “I want to read the Bible in a year” resolution. It sounds great — but why do so many people lose steam by March or April? For me, it comes down to this: the “why” wasn’t strong enough.
Why do you want to read the Bible in a year?
Is it to check a box?
To post about it and encourage others?
Or because you truly want to grow closer to God?
Here’s my challenge for you regarding any resolution you’ve started — go deeper.
Instead of just saying, “I want to read the Bible in a year,” what if the goal became, “I want to grow closer to God this year”? Suddenly, reading the Bible becomes one part of a much bigger mission — one that aligns with His purpose, not just our own plans.
The same principle applies to our health goals. “I want to lose 50 pounds” sounds great — but why does it matter? If the goal shifts to, “I want God to use me in more physically demanding opportunities this year, so I need to treat my body better,” that’s a whole different level of motivation. You’ve connected your goal to your calling.
Seriously, resolutions without resolve are pointless — but when you anchor them in a desire to glorify God, everything changes.
So as you step into 2026, take time to get clear on your why. Make sure every pursuit flows from a heart that’s chasing after Him.
I’d love to hear what you’re planning to pursue this year. Hit reply and let me know — and if you want help digging into your “why,” I’d be honored to offer a fresh perspective.
Here’s to a new year, to doing something new, and to taking bold steps of obedience in what He’s calling you to do.
Keep leaning in. Keep showing up. And keep unleashing the Lion Within.
