Why Love Alone Isn’t Enough to Build a Strong Marriage
Now, before you hit delete after such a bold statement, hear me out. While I’ll admit I’m not a big Beatles fan (let’s face it—they’re no Skynyrd), what stuck out to me and begged to be shared is the perplexity of their hit song, “All You Need Is Love.” I find it perplexing because each of the four Beatles experienced failed marriages.
What struck me as interesting is how often people—including myself at one point—think that for a marriage to thrive, love is the only ingredient needed for success. And if that were true, we’d be living in a world of cupcakes and rainbows, right? But if you’ve been married for more than a minute, you know that’s not how reality works.
After walking through different seasons with my bride, I started to realize that while love is vital, it falls short if it doesn’t lead me to take action. Our marriage grows stronger when I demonstrate my love and commitment through the actions I take every day. Proverbs 15:1 is a great reminder for us all about how to truly show love in our marriages: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
So, to the Beatles fans out there, I hope we can still be friends. And I’ll leave you with a few words from the master poet Ronnie Van Zant: “Find a woman and you’ll find love, and don’t forget, son, there is Someone up above.” Now that’s something worth getting excited about. Ronnie understood that true fulfillment in marriage is only found when the love of a spouse and the love of God are united in our hearts.
