Full transparency here, I have a tendency to get triggered — fast.
Here are a few things that, even to this day, can flip my attitude on a dime:
- Disrespectful comments.
- My wife’s tone.
- One of my kids being defiant.
And suddenly it’s like a switch flips.
I can be having the best day, and literally in the blink of an eye my entire attitude shifts. It moves from steady to defensive, from patient to harsh.
Then I start rationalizing my behavior:
“I’m just tired.”
“I had a hard day.”
“They don’t understand me.”
But Proverbs 4:23 confronts that line of thinking head-on.
It shows me that my reactions aren’t ultimately caused by the moment — they reveal what’s already in my heart. The moment simply exposes it.
A helpful way to think about triggers is to see them as a flashlight. They illuminate what we’ve allowed to collect in the corners of our mind and soul.
This is where a lot of guys push back. We sometimes believe we can binge on the world and still produce godly fruit (I used to think that way all the time).
We want to believe we can:
- Look at porn
- Let our eyes drift
- Fill our minds with crude jokes and cuss-filled entertainment
- Stay glued to anger-driven news and toxic content
- Ignore prayer
- Neglect Scripture
…and then somehow expect patience, purity, and peace to naturally flow out.
But it doesn’t work that way.
The reality I’ve experienced firsthand is simple: when I let garbage in, garbage out is the result.
That doesn’t mean all is hopeless though — it does mean we need to wake up and get serious about guarding our heart.
Sometimes that requires radical action.
Here’s the choice:
You can be radical for the world and blend in.
Or you can be radical for God and stand out.
Being radical for the world doesn’t take courage — it takes conformity.
But being radical for God? That takes leadership. And that’s exactly what God’s Word is showing us.
It tells us:
- Stop living with your head in the sand.
- Stop acting shocked when anger pours out.
- Stop pretending your inputs don’t matter.
- Stop leaving your heart unguarded.
Because the heart is not neutral territory.
It’s a battlefield.
And if you aren’t guarding it, someone else is influencing it.
