In this episode:
Psalm 23 is one of the most beloved and well known Psalm’s in the Bible.
In this Spiritual Kick Off Chris unpacks a few ways to consider this Psalm as you grow as a leader. He breaks it down into areas exploring provision, protection and promises.
God’s provision is amazing and He wants the absolute best for his people. Take comfort in that and trust in Him no matter what comes your way.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Click To TweetPsalm 23:6
Okay. So it’s a big topics this week. We’re going to unpack a lot of things on Wednesday. You have a phenomenal guest. That’s going to really unpack servant leadership and legacy with us. So for the spiritual kickoff, I want her to focus on Psalm 23. And we talk about that in the meat episode. So you’ll, we’ll dig into that deeper then, but let’s look at some scripture together to get, get our week, start at.
Correct. And then I’m going to really give you some things that God has revealed through the holy spirit and this scripture that spoke to me. So Regal out of, out of Psalm 23, the Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want, he makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul.
He guides me in the past that righteousness or his namesake, even though I walked through the valley of the shadow of death. I fear no evil where you are with me, your rod and your staff. They. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You have anointed my head with oil, my cup overflows, surely goodness and love.
Kindness will follow me all the days of my life. And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever, such a beautiful Psalm written, obviously by David. He wrote that song. And it speaks so much. And what we’re going to look at here, guys, we’re going to break this down into three areas. The provision that God gives us the protection that he talks about in the promises from the song, it’s a beautifully written song.
So it starts off with the Lord is my shepherd. So what does he insinuating there? Well, they’re calling a sheep. Okay. So we’re our sheaves. So let’s look at some other scriptures. So if you go look at Psalm 100 verse three, it says, know that the Lord himself has got it. Is he who has made us and not we ourselves.
We are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Pretty clear right there that we’re sheep. Okay. You need a little bit more proof. Penguin. Me, John 10 Barcelona. This is Jesus speaking. I am the good shepherd, the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. Okay guys. So you probably didn’t want to have your spiritual kickoff get started with being told us you’re a sheep and I’m sorry, but we are.
Okay. So he is the shepherd. We are the sheep. And thank goodness we have him as a shepherd because if you think about sheep, if you know anything about. They’re not very smart animals. They’re actually dumb. They can be stubborn. They do things their own way. They have to be led. They have to be fed. They can’t take care of themselves.
They’re always getting into mischief in the sound like I’m speaking about you. I definitely sound like I’m speaking about me at times. That’s for sure. So we are sheep and you know what the cool part. When you look at sheep, let’s say you go to a big field full of sheep and you have several different shepherds out.
They can actually call the name. The shepherd can speak and start walking in a direction. And everyone, a, his sheep will follow him. And the next shepherd can do the same in the next shepherd and his own down the line. Now how’s that possible that those sheep who are stubborn, they, they’re not, they’re not very smart, know their shepherd and know which where to go, so they don’t get, they don’t get lost.
They know his voice. They know his voice and they, they can recognize that voice and go straight to it. So as long as the sheep of the world and Jesus is our shepherd, the, you recognize his voice. You need to be able to hear what Jesus and what the spirit is trying to tell us. And you can only do that when you spend time with him, David.
You have to be in the word, you need to spend time in scripture and you maybe, maybe reading’s not your thing. That’s okay. You can get the, you can get the Bible on audio version, but get it in. Get that time, make it a priority to spend time with God every day, because you need to be able to recognize his voice.
He may be calling you to do something right now, but if you can’t recognize God, when he’s trying to talk to you, you’re going to miss it and you don’t want to miss. You need to be there. You have to keep yourself fed with the spirit and this will feed you. And from there illumination, you’ll be able to see, you’ll be able to have the light.
You’ll be able to know what true wisdom and discernment, what God desires for you. So now let’s look at a second part. I shall not want, well, we love that verse. No way I shall not want, but let’s here. If you actually look at what the want means and the Hebrew is not actually talking about one. It’s talking about lack.
So kind of, you can mentally replace that. I shall not lack, so it’s not really what we want, but he gives us what we need according to his will. Okay. So make that quick, you know, uh, comparison there. So it’s not one it’s need it’s really. What we need and lack he has gone to provide for us. And that is, uh, that that should just be so uplifting for you this morning, as you think through what’s going on in your life and you, and you have this, this, this moment with God digging into the scripture.
Now, when he talks about leading, besides. Quiet waters and lie down in green pastures. What is he talking about there? Well, I did a Bible study and I went and I did some research on this and, and the, the pastor that I was, that was going through the scripture. He actually equated it to contentment and patience.
So the green pastures, he equated that to contentment. Cause you know, the green pastures, you know, they’re, they are fulfilled. They are very content, the still water being patients. And you know, if you’re struggling with contentment or patients. You know, maybe this is a good scripture to focus on because are you following the good shepherd?
It was something very convicting for me. Maybe I’m not spending as much time with the good shepherd as I need to be. If, if, if, if I’m not being patient, if I’m not, if I’m always uneasy, if starting to work towards me, am I really listening to Jesus? Or am I trying to figure this all out on my own? So think about that contentment and steal water, and just think about guys.
You go out in nature. Maybe you roll up on a pump. Or a lake early in the morning, we’ll go camping and you wake up in that stillness. It’s on the water. How beautiful is that? It’s just a piece that you can see on that water still. There’s no ripples and that’s what we want. That’s what God wants for you.
He wants it in your soul. He wants it in your heart. He wants that piece, but she had to be patient and we need to be following and listening for. And then he talks about, he guides me in the path of righteousness for his name’s sake. So righteousness, what is he talking about there? Well, right standing with God, the healing and restoration.
So to lead, we’re going to be talking about leadership big time this week, you have to first learn how to follow. And that’s hard. It can be hard to be a follower. Right. You know, we all just want to get out there and just follow me, let me lead. But Jesus is saying he know what they got. I’m the leader. You follow me in that.
I’m going to show you the way and that’s his love towards us. And if we focus on him, if we really strive for his word, Oh, he’s going to have the provision protection and promises that we so desperately need in our life. So let’s just look at a little bit more, even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, he’s talking about protection.
I will feel no fear, no evil for you are with me, your rod and your staff. They comfort me. You prepare a table for me and the presence of my enemy. So God is going to take care of us. He’s going to protect. He has our back. We had the ultimate warrior standing right here with us and we have the power within us and the promises.
It’s so beautiful. Have a promises, surely goodness and love. Kindness will follow me all the days of my life. And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. And I’d say, well, that’s a promise. You can take to the bank as a promise. You can hang your hat on to enough. God loves you so much. He loves you where you’re at.
You don’t have to apologize for the same thing. 10 times. It’s a one and done deal. You can repent. He will accept it. You are with him. You are in him. He will accept you and you in his kingdom because you have accepted Jesus in your heart. So this is just a beautiful song. Beautiful talking about prov provision protection and promises.
And guys, we hope this spiritual kick. Really just helps you get going this week. Is this going to be a great week? There are great things ahead. We’re going to be talking about servant leadership and legacy. There’s a big topics, but I’ll tell you what guys. It all starts with spending time and the word.
Okay. You got to spend time in the word. So come back for the meat episode on Wednesday. Again, the guests is going to really unpack a lot of scripture. We’re going to be going through some phenomenal areas on servant leadership legacy things that you could actually start implementing and trying in your life right now to be the leader you’re predestined to beat.
Now the question of the week, what I really want you to re to, to think about how are you building a legacy through servant leadership? Not through leadership through servant leadership. So how are you building a legacy through servant leadership? And you knew you may be thinking, you know what, Chris I’m in my twenties, I don’t care about legacy.
I’m just trying to live. I’m just trying to make it in a week, every day as your chance to impact your legacy, don’t waste it. And I believe guys, you’re predestined to do great things, but you have to lean into this. It is up to you. No, one’s going to do it for you. Spend time in God’s word, seek to understand what he wants for you and then lean into it.
