In this episode:
The Apostle Paul is writing this as instructions to elders concerning leadership.
This is the spiritual kick off this week as Lions are leading their homes and you can take these words as if Paul were speaking directly to you. The duties he speaks of include ruling, pastoring/shepherding the flock, guarding truth and general oversight of work and finances. Do any of those sound like a strong leader of the home? It should!
He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?) Click To Tweet1 Timothy 3:4-5
That is grounded in Christ. Okay. That’s a big topic. When we’re talking about family culture. Now I went to first Timothy chapter three, verses four through five. That’s going to be distributor that we need to focus on this week. He must be one who manages his whole household. Well, keeping his children under control with all dignity.
But if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God? So guys, there’s a lot to unpack there. And Paul is writing. He is writing this as instructions actually to the elders. Okay. Concerning leadership. Now the elder and this sense was an official position in the church, you know, but we can apply it to being like an overseer of our families.
And we can gain a lot of value when we think of it in that light. So an elder duties, if you start, if you look back and, and understood what elders actually were charged of and included ruling, uh, pastoring and shepherding. Guarding the truth and general oversight of work. And I found this interesting, my study Bible called finances.
It says general oversight of work and finances. So it, Paul was making that tie right there. So that household that he’s talking about right there, he must be one who manages his own household. That includes all of those areas. So, I mean, if you start thinking about it, let’s unpack that for a minute. For our spiritual kickoff here, ruling, you know, we have to set the standards that we want our families to.
You know that that’s the bottom line. We have to set those standards. No one else is going to do it for us. The behaviors, the rituals, all that stuff, that centers on Christ. We have to set that because if we’re relying on someone else, it’s not going to happen. So from a ruling standpoint, you got to lean in on this guys now from a pasturing or shepherding the flock standpoint.
You’re pastoring or shepherding the people in your house. You know, your children, your wife, you are, you are the overseer. You are the man that God has called to lead to be that leader. It’s you’re predestined to be. So we need to intentionally teach here and demonstrate the gospel. Every day, you need to be looking for areas where you can apply the gospel and show, you know, Jesus love the things that he’s done for us and how that your family can learn from that.
So you need to be always looking for ways to be that pasture, to be that shepherd inside your home. Right? Because if you’re not that pastor, you’re not the shepherd, someone else is going to be speaking into their life. And you as the dad, as the leader, as the man, the Christian man, that, that you’re, that you’re determined that.
You need to be intentional with your words and your actions. It’s speaking truth. And speaking about truth, guarding truth, that was something that the elders did. So we need to be willing to just voraciously fight for our families and do not let Satan and his allies penetrate because I’ll tell you what our kids is all around us.
They’re getting hit with all sorts of lies. And the last will not stop coming. It seems like to me, they get worse and worse every day. So we need to make sure that we are standing on the truth and when something does not align, it is our responsibility to act. And what is the truth? What a truth is God’s word it’s right there.
Guys pick it up. But how are you going to know the truth? Well, you don’t have to actually get in the word and study it because the only way you’re going to know what something is false is, you know, what’s true. Just think about the way that. It is, it’s looked at from a counterfeit standpoint, the only way they can tell it, say, you know, what a true a hundred dollar bill looks like.
And if you know those true factors, you can quickly identify the counterfeits, right? Same principle applies here, guys. We need to lean into that. So you have to take the rain here. You really have to own this. And why sometimes, you know, you need to live to rule that iron fist, because you know, we’re talking about leading with honor control and.
It is important to, to be able to S to take that position. The man of God that we need is what they need. Your family needs to see most day in and day out. They need to see that man of God, you know, are they seeing the same man Monday through Saturday that they’re seeing on Sunday now that makes you squirm in your seat.
If that makes you clear your throat or, or, or do a little wiggle that may be telling you. Yeah, I’m not trying to call you out, but I am trying to make you aware. Cause we need to show our children. We need to show our wife. We need to show everyone around us, the man of God, every day, you know, I was in, in a, in an engagement recently with a man and he noticed something I was wearing at that point to my Christian lifestyle that really tried to show and I came to find out he was a believer.
I’ve been around this guy for years. It never came. Now, in this case it did. So he was convicted that, you know, Hey Chris, you didn’t know, I was a believer and you know, and it made him feel bad. But at the same point, you know, outside of me wearing my hat, he didn’t know I was one. So we need to be a man of God all the time.
You know, we need to really live that out. So there’s a full confession, you know, I don’t always get it right. Don’t claim to, but we need to lean into that. And. At culture, you start working on showing Jesus, demonstrating a gospel, teaching your kids about discipleship, teaching them about the great commission.
You are doing your job right there at leading your family and setting the culture that you’re gonna need to be over to overcome the darkness of this world and the darkness. It is out there guys so far out there, and it starts right now, you know? So if you want to build that family culture, how are you going to do it to.
There’s no one else looking at rear view mirror. You’ll if you’re at the gym, looking at me right now, you are the man that sets your family culture. You can take actions today to start moving that family culture closer to God, to glorify Christ more, to get people to lean. But you’re going to have to start doing, you know, it all saying, there’s more calls than talk.
You know, you can go speak all these things, what you want on Sunday. And you can read these Bible verses to your kids on Sunday if you want. But if they’re not saying it Monday through Saturday, as well as fallen on deaf ears, what they need to see is what does are you as the leader, as the dad, as the head of the house, how are you demonstrating every day?
Your love for Christ? How are you doing. You guys, I don’t get this right all the time. And don’t, there’s many times where I let my family down. I let my kids down and I have to constantly be working at it. I have to constantly be praying for the spirit to show me ways that I need to start improving, to be able to be that man who manages my household well, keeps my children under control with all dignity, because of I’m going to be the man that doesn’t know how to, if I can’t do that, how can I take care of the church of God?
I can’t start with you. You can do this a go to first Timothy three, four through five. Let that soak in for this week. Now what she didn’t expect on Wednesday. I have a great episode coming where I had an expert on culture. He comes in, he can give us a lot of practical tips and examples for a man who we can.
Literally, we can take these, these examples and apply them today. So you’ll be able to leave that, that, that podcast, that episode you’ll be able to leave. And have exact actual action items that you can move on. And how cool is that? You can take them to sit down with your wife, sit down with your kids, do some planning.
There’s going to be some real practical ways that you can take to start making an impact. So you do not want to miss the Wednesday episode, the meat episode this week. Not a question I want you guys to think about this week. Name one change that would impact your family culture, that centers on glorifying crime.
One change. So what’s one thing you can do. I’m not asking you to do 10. I’m not asking you to do five, one. What’s one thing. Are you reading your Bible every day with your kids? Are you praying what your kids are you praying with your wife? Do your kids see you reading God’s word. You know, the little things like that, make a big difference.
What’s one thing you can change that will impact your family culture, that centers, uncle, or find. Guys, that’s your spiritual kickoff. I want you to you. I want you to crush it this week.
