In this episode:
Too often the world wants to put us in a box
This Fun Friday is all about thriving and not just getting by. Don’t limit yourself. To overcome this mindset remember the scripture of the week:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Click To TweetProverbs 3:5-6
This week Pete Durand shared tremendous insight on how he’s taken that scripture and applied it to many areas of his life. Pete shares tips and ideas around the main focus for The Lion Within Us (Health, Wealth and Self). Some of the wisdom he shared was understanding the differences in needs and wants. There was also a beautiful model of prayer that Pete uses everyday and it is sure to be something that helps everyone grow in their walk.
I'm not here to make you feel good. I'm here to help you grow in your Christian walk and to be the leader. Click To TweetChris Grainger
Pete Durand. And Pete Durand brought, just brought it, everything. It was amazing. Great conversation about, you know, hail will self. We unpacked a lot around our careers, around raising our kids, being attentional with our wives. So, you know, I’ll call them this fun Friday, thriving, not surviving baby. Cause it’s all about thriving.
You know, there were so many great tips that we talked about when Pete and I got together. So I want to start off by reminding us of the. Proverbs three verses five and six. And remember, this is the verse that Pete talked about, and that’s why we focused on it this week. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean, not on your own understanding in all your ways, submit to him, and he will make your paths straight to go back all the way to that spiritual kickoff on money, where I talked about trust.
Understanding and submitting and gas. I know that doesn’t sit well with a lot of guys out there, but that’s okay. I’m not, I’m not here to, to, to make you feel good. I’m here to help you grow as a Christian to help you grow in your walk and to be the leader. So I will tell you what that is a great piece of scripture.
How are you Bible? Write it, write it on a note card. Put it in your pocket. That’s one to remember right there. Okay. You can pull it out and use it as needed, but if you go back to that conversation with. What a humble guy just want a humble guy. I mean, he brought so much wisdom around those three areas of health, wealth, and self, and you know, very fit guy.
He has he, but he has his routine figured out. And I tell you what, what really caught me off guard. How was expecting Pete to be a guy like me, where he gets up and just works out and gets that workout done right away. But his routine is that hour of prayer. Devotion. How powerful was that. And then how powerful is his structure praying for others first, right.
And all the needs that are out there. And then, you know, just praying for the world and for peace and then praying for his family and the people, you know, directly petty had this in his, his lineage, if you will, and then praying for himself, you know, and I just, I felt like he starts out with such a wide net that he casts the steadily, working it back to him.
So. Because at the end of the day, that self has to be centered in Christ to be able to lead and to be able to do the things that we’re called to do. Right. So I just, I think there were so many impactful areas that Pete brought so highly encourage you guys to go back, check it out. It was just a wonderful conversation, you know, or talks about these verses waltz.
Too much to uncover here, go check out Wednesday’s episode. You will not be disappointed. Then, you know, a fun Fridays we’d like to give tips. I like to give you a health tip, a well tip and a self tips. So I went back to Pete’s conversation and I wanted to pull some things to give you guys just as a business, a little extra highlight.
So from a health tip, find your why, you know, Pete, talk about finding your why, you know, so many times we go this roller coaster. Oh, health journey, you know, we’re or we’re gaining a lot of weight. So we’re going to do this this fast or just new fad diet and go right back down. And they were going to feel pretty good about ourselves.
The next thing you know, you right back up on the scale, you’re back down. It’s a constant roller coaster where you need, if you had a good one. To what your wife or being fit and trying to get to, to have the health that you need, because ultimately we need to be healthy wire to serve the Lord. He may call us into service that we need our bodies finally tuned.
So that, that could be part of your why maybe it’s your family, but whatever it is, you need to get really clear crystal clear on what that wise. You know, write it down and get pictures of it, whatever you need to do for motivation, have it in front of you and all times. And then once you have your, why find a program that’s going to work for you and this is going to fit your schedule and that you’re going to actually commit to, you know, maybe it’s just starting out with starting small with, uh, changes in your diet.
Maybe it’s starting with add some cardio, you know, you don’t want to go. Wow. Yeah. If you never worked out, you don’t want to go working out like, like, like P not, you know, two hours a day and you will burn out in a week. You can be irritated, frustrated. It didn’t work. You’re not gonna get the results you want.
You’ll be, you know, just back on the couch, start slow. When I was three 30, I started on a bike doing about 15 minutes, just Palin, not even, not even a lot of resistance, just pedaling just to get. To get my body used to, okay, we’re going to, we’re going to do some things, some things that we haven’t been doing, so, you know, hang on here.
So just start slow and then slowly incremented up and then find those programs. There’s tons of programs out there. I’m not going to want you to want Pete and I talked about several we use, but find something that she feels gonna fit for you and that you’ll commit to, and that you enjoy the next thing, you know, it’s just going to become party room.
So there you go stop, find your why wealth tip invest in assets that will serve you later. You know, Pete and I talked about this one too, so I’m, you know, I’m pulling draw a lot of this conversation out here for this fund Friday, but you’re looking for assets that appreciate not depreciate. So what’s the difference.
Appreciate means to grow. So you want things that are actually, as you, as you investing them, the accounts grow, think about your retirement account. You will not be investing in that. If that things steadily declined. Now you may have moments of decline, but over the period of a lifetime, that account is going to be on an upward trend.
Depreciation is Zack opposite. You know, you bought an asset and when you go to sell it, it’s worth less than when you bought it. It’s depreciating. It’s losing. A lot of times people, people associate that with cars, you know, they S they depreciate. So I’m really big home bank, older cars that you can pay cash for, because they’re going to appreciate there’s, there’s nothing that’s going to, uh, gain value for you with that investment.
So there’s you, there’s your tip from a wealth standpoint, invest in those assets that will serve you later. And the sales tip, finding prayer partners, and, and we’re really leaning into that. We need to take this pre. Life more series. You know, Pete talked about his prayer life and the way he, he praise, but he also taught that his prayer, prayer life with his wife.
And then he has that group of 10 men that are helping him grow. And they’re constantly changing, challenging him, but you need to find a prayer partner and, you know, you need to help your wife and your kids plug in and find prayer partners that people they can pray with as well as ask God to help them.
No, you don’t want to force this as we talked about, but peers and friends, they can really have a lot of influence. So trying to encourage your wife, if she gets, you know, encourage to find a Bible study, she’s not part of one encouraged her start one. It could be very simple where you just get a devotional book and work through it.
Don’t have to make it complicated, but. Uh, intentional about helping your, your partner, your wife, your kids, and yourself by knows prayer partners. We’re going to help you grow. Okay. So there your tips find your why cause everybody’s wives different invest in assets that will serve you later, and they have find prayer partners and help your wife and your kids find those prayer partners.
So I hope you guys enjoy those tips. Really try to think about how you can incorporate them into your daily life. Now for the book of the week, I was struggling to be honest, trying to figure out a book that would really fit well with Pete. I went back to my library and I found this book it’s called pray fit.
And I remember doing this book when I was kind of getting started with my weight loss journey and it was kind of cool because he has some devotion. It has exercises and meal plans that you could work in, in kind of get started with. Okay. So again, this is pretty old stuff, so it may not be applicable to everyone out there, but if you’re looking just for a way get started, this book pray fit.
I like the spiritual side of it. It helped me grow. It’s not, it wasn’t a lot, but the daily devotionals it’s written like a 28 day plan. So you can just rinse and repeat this thing over and over change things up, but it gives you something to look. And maybe that’s just what you need a starting point, some data just to give you some insight of where you could go.
Okay. So there, there’s your book of the week. We’ll have that in the show notes and now bad joke, time for fun Fridays, you know, we’ve gotta have those dad jokes, right? So they’re joke. Number one, I had to fire my fruit truck delivery today. I hate to let the man go. But he was driving me bananas. So there you go, guys.
I know Dan though, probably not the top of the barrel there, but Hey, we do our best here. Number two to everyone out there, suffering from paranoia. Just remember. You’re not alone. All right, guys, let us know which one, the mango bananas or the paranoia. Number one. And number two, you may get an hour roll on both of those and you’re a member eye rolls count.
That’s okay. Not a question a week. We’ve talked about it all week and you don’t have to I’ll credit it. My friend Daniel, uh, that at our church who had this question and I kind of modified it a little bit, but I thought this is just a powerful question. Is would you be found guilty of being a Christian at work and it.
You know, and you need to think about that your kids, they need to see the Christian father every day, not just Sunday at work, you can show up and show the fruit of the spirit and, and, and walk with Christ every day at work. And people can see that, or you can turn it off and go with the flow and fit in.
And don’t say anything when dark things come up and. Use language that’s not reflective of, of Christian walk that you can make that choice to the choice is really yours. But one day you’re going to have to answer. Judgment’s coming. I’m not the judge, but I am telling you, it is crystal clear and scripture.
We will be held accountable for everything we do and say, we’ll have to answer for, you know, now we’re under grace, we’re forgiven, but we need to be very aware, very, very intensive. About our walk every day to show that through your spirit. So there’s your question. Would you be found guilty of being a Christian at work and at home?
