This week we will be digging deep in that topic and specifically how to combat it. In this Spiritual Kick Off Chris unpacks Philippians 4:8 and shares ideas on how this verse can provide encouragement and an escape path from going off the deep end.

So there is righteous anger, and that’s okay. You can have that cup anger, but we’re not going to be talking about the righteous type. We’re going to be talking about the anger, that many lions out there, including my. Battle with, you know, it’s the bad anger and then what are we going to do to combat it?
Well, we got to go with scripture. So for this spiritual kickoff this week, we’re going to look at Philippians four, verse eight, finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right. Whatever is pure, whatever is lovely. Whatever is admirable. If anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things.
Okay. So it’s a beautiful verse. And let’s first think about who wrote it will is Paul, the apostle Paul. He wrote that he wrote it to the church of Philippi. It’s a very personal letter to the church, and it’s almost like a personal thank you letter when you really read into it. And because the church at Philippi, they provided Paul with many gifts and they served him in great ways.
And the crazy part, when you think about Philippians and, and Paul. Is that he was actually imprisoned and wrong and it wasn’t looking good. So it was not like he was out there. He can cook cakes and having rainbows and did all this wonderful stuff. He was in some dire, straight skies, you know? And he was on trial before Caesar.
I mean, it was getting down and dirty. So this is a tough time in Paul’s life and his journey and it, but he still wrote such an incredible, thank you message to the church Philippa, and there’s so much for us. Right. So when you think about prisons, you know, I mean, it there’s, he could have been having a pity party, you know, and he could have been outright angry and just mad.
Right. But what do you think of when you envision prisons? And I’m not thinking about these guys sitting around, you know, playing a tic-tac-toe and just re you know, half avenue, each other. I mean, it’s, there’s a dangerous places, but it sounds, there are people in there have done terrible things. And, you know, luckily we had the prison system so we can keep those, those individuals isolated and away from the rest of the society.
But Paul was in it, he was in the middle of it and he was still had his heart on serving the Lord and writing Philippians. And it’s just, you know, it’s so it would be so easy. You know, when I think through that verses of Philippians four eight, how Paul could he, he w he could’ve went. Right. He could have said, is saying true.
He could have been talking about boss instead of noble dishonorable instead of right. Wrong instead of pure and pure, instead of lovely wicked, right. Instead of admirable, maybe he would have put the pourable, you know, just, just terrible things. But he did, he didn’t do that. So I’ve wanted to go back into verse one.
When I look at scripture, I’ll always try to look a little bit ahead, a little bit behind. The C really where you get a better context. So it’s in chapter four, right? That we’re, that we’re digging in, but I started verse four and it’s in my book in my Bible. It actually says peace with self and kind of like the header.
And it starts with w with rejoicing. That’s where he talks about this rejoicing. You know, it says rejoice in the Lord, always again, I say rejoice. So that tells you right there, you know, we have to have a. Ready to rejoice and accounted a law all at all times. And then Philippians four, six, probably one of the most famous verses out there.
Right? No anxiety. It talks about don’t be anxious, take everything and prayer supplication being made known to God. You know, that is this beauty that is dead is beautiful. That, that versus helped me a lot. Go back to the line, through the lines with anxiety. Very very vulnerable. Very real with you guys. I, I struggle with that, but this is a verse that really helps me.
And in verse eight and the next verse, verse seven, rather talks about the peace that passes all understanding. And I remember the first time my wife told me that and, and, and she, she just, she mentioned, you know, you need, you’re looking for the peace that passes all understanding. I just thought it was beautiful.
I’m like, that was awesome, baby. She’s well, it’s in Philippians. It’s like, oh, so she, she taught me that one. So it was, that’s a verse. There’s so much out there fighting against us guys. There’s so many things fighting and trying to pull us away to pull us away, to make us mad, make us angry, but God is offering a peace that passes all understanding.
We can’t even comprehend how much he loves us. It’s crazy how much he loves us. If we focused our thoughts there. Right. And, and go towards that peace. It’s going to be unbelievable. So he gives us first verse eight said we will know how to do that. And to focus on those tanks. And it says right there that we should dwell on these steaks.
So this is just not a one-time deal, right? This today’s a be 10, your focus and touch Nally, focusing on the truth. We have to S w uh, this study think ruminate, just let that stuff, just this linger, right? All the time. It’s not a one and done all the. And if you look at verse nine, it can, it concludes by telling us and guys, you shouldn’t, you should like this.
We got to practice it. So God recognizes. We’re not going to get this right out the gate. It takes practice. Think about a sports you played growing up or skill you have now, maybe guitar player or a drummer or you great baseball player. You have to practice. You have to put in the reps. You’re not going to get stronger at the gym just by going and doing one set and go.
It takes consistent over and over and over. And it’s a daily daily, you have to do this, you have to practice and you have to think about these things because you want that peace. I want you to have joy and ultimately I want you to have peace with yourself and only where are you going to get that is leaning into this verse.
And again, right here, whatever’s true. Whatever’s honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is good. There’s any excellence. And if anything, worthy of praise, dwell on these things. So it’s just a beautiful verse gas. I want you to take that verse highlighter in your Bible. I got pretty much the whole Philippians four, for those watching on YouTube, you can see me, you know, four from four through verse nine.
It’s it’s all marked up. It’s highlighted. It’s underlined has got notes all around it, you know, and at the very bottom of our Bible, I wrote God is never worried. He’s not. And I tell you what guys are. We can combat that anger when we choose to lean on the Lord to go to scripture, to bring, thanks to him in prayer is so freeing.

Paul was writing to the church at Philippi and it was a very personal letter on top of that. The crazy part of it all…PAUL WAS IN PRISON when he wrote these words. So think about that for a minute. At a seemingly low place in his life the Holy Spirit gave him these words and as believers in Jesus Christ you have the same power inside of you right now.
We want you all to have joy in your life and we know it is possible when you fully submit to Christ. Anger can be defeated and it is scripture like this that can help you be the leader you are predestined to be!
