In this episode:
Sometimes the most well known verses are where we get in trouble.
In this Spiritual Kick Off Chris unpacks Romans 8:28 and focuses in on three primary areas to consider with this well known passage:
- Do not misquote it! Too often we omit/add words to fit what we feel it should be – stop that behavior and let the scripture be the scripture!
- It’s not all cupcakes and rainbows! – we are going to face trials and we must remember that no matter the circumstances God is in control.
- Do not stop reading at verse 28 – a great practice when reading scripture (particularly when someone provides a verse is to look in front and behind for context). Verse 29 gives further insight to help us grow in our walk.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Click To TweetRomans 8:28
Now a lot of people know this one already. So what, what this, what this verse says, and we know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love him. Who have been called according to his purpose. Love it. Love it. Now, first of all, we need to know where is Romans, right. Okay. So we need to know that.
So again, if you’re new to, to Christianity, no big deal. The Bible’s big. It’s intimidating. It could be hard to, to navigate sometimes. So we’re gonna unpack it. So first thing you go, you need to do is go to a new Testament. Okay. You got Matthew, mark, Luke and John. Okay. And then after that, you’re gonna have acts now, right after that, you’ll have Romans.
Okay. And Romans eight, probably most arguably the greatest chapter in the Bible. I mean, it, I mean, that’s, you know, that is a matter of opinion, but they, what, it’s a great chapter in the Bible and it’s probably one of the most quoted verses. And that’s sometimes where we can get in trouble. Right. If this it’s stuff for quoted.
So I wanna unpack you to right here and this spiritual kickoff three items to consider. When you look at this scripture. Okay. So we’re gonna look at three areas, primarily one don’t misquote it. okay. I know that sounds simple, but don’t misquote it. Well, what I mean here is it includes loving God and being called.
Right. You know, so many times it says, and we know that in all things, God works for the good and then, but we gotta remember for those who love him and who have been called to his corner and his purpose. So don’t just go for the first part. It’s a promise for real believers. Real believers. Okay. Not just for those claiming they won’t be one thing.
And living in the world to love God, you must have a life of obedience, period. I get it. Crap’s going to happen, you know, but when that stuff happens, God’s gonna use it for our good. If we let him, he wants a deeper relationship with us bottom. You gotta remember that in Christ. If you have Christ, there is no condemnation, right?
There’s no judgment. Romans eight one right here. Cause again, one of the greatest verses in the chapters, in the Bible and, and that’s, and you have to remember, so that’s, uh, why you’re feeling that you’re under attack. You just need to remember no Uhuh, there’s no ation for those that are in Christ. Jesus love God.
That is the key. Okay. Number. You need to or recognize that it’s not all cupcakes and rainbows as pastor Jovie. You know, you guys go back, listen to pastor Jovie, Jovie Martin. He told me, you know, we’re, we’re, we’re not snowflakes puppy breath or Skittles are we we’re in sinners in need of a savior. And we need to remember that.
Cause if that’s the case, then we know sins going to be in this world and we’re gonna face trials. We’re going to face ’em until Jesus returns. We’re gonna be battling daily. But, but God is more powerful. He can re redeem and restore anything for our good and his glory. You gotta admit everything on earth is not good, but God can use all things for good.
So hear that difference. Hear that difference. The third thing I want you to think about don’t stop at verse 20. Don’t stop at verse 28. We need to, when we, when we study the Bible, when we actually get into the word too many times, we just stop. When, when you know things, uh, when we read a scripture, we just stop there.
I like to go and ahead and behind and see what else is gonna tell us. So if you look at 29, okay. 29. He’s gonna tell us for those whom he for knew he also predestined to become conformed to the image of his son so that he would be the first born among the brethren. Very interesting. Right. Very interesting.
So remember, a lot of stuff happens for E to make us grow closer to him, or to be more like him, either way we’re moving in the right direction. Isn’t it awesome that he knew everything and predestined us to be just like to, to be like, Jesus. That shit get us so fired up right now. We don’t know what to do.
So look at those first three words of verse 28 and we know we know how cool is it and awesome. Is it when you know something, when you know it, Billy Graham actually said it, this is not conjecture. This is not happenstance. This is not, perhaps this is not, maybe this is, this is ironically certainty. We know that all things work together for good.
As long as we are here, people will try to figure out why things happen. Right. But you know what? This verse clearly tells us that nothing happens without a defined purpose. It said divine purpose and why we may not know it decide of heaven. We can rest in security that God is in control because of that, we had the hope, you know, when we lost our daughter, I have no reason I have no, I don’t know why, but I trust.
And I know that somehow God’s using that for good. Now I I’ll probably never know that answer this side of heaven. And for those of you who have lost children, You probably feel the same way, but you know what, one day it will be revealed one day. It will. We just need to remember that hope and be hungry to have that relationship with the Lord.
And we know that all thing, God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Guys, if you’re listening to in line within us, you have been called. God is working on you right now. Now it may be uncomfortable. It may cause stress anxiety. You may want to just ball up into fetal position.
