In this episode:
Putting love and relationships at the core of how we live is the answer.
In this Spiritual Kick Off Chris unpacks a wonderful part of Scripture where Jesus was teaching what we He desires for us and our walks. Most can get onboard with the idea of loving God as that makes perfect sense.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Click To TweetMatthew 22:37
We’re gonna be looking at Matthew this week. Matthew 22 will be looking at verses 36 through 39. So here we go, teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the. Jesus replied, love the Lord, your God, with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind. This is the first greatest commandment. And the second is like, it love your neighbor as yourself.
So there you go guys. Beautiful scripture right there. Let’s unpack that and see what it’s really telling us. Okay. First of all, we need to know where it is, right. We need to know where is Matthew? So Matthew actually is the first gospel. So go through your old Testament. Soon as you get to your new Testament, you’ll have Matthews and that, and Matthew’s actually called one of the gospels.
So you, a lot of times we hear people talk about what is the gospel? The gospels are Matthew, mark, Luke and John. So Matthew is the very first one. Now this is pretty cool. Cause Jesus is actually smashing together. Two parts of the old Testament in this one sentence here. Now what he’s, where he’s getting this from is Deuteronomy six, five.
So I got that pulled up right here, dude, to my Deuteronomy six verse five. Uh, it says you shall love the Lord of your God with all your heart, with all your soul and all. Sounds pretty familiar. What he just said. Right. Then it also combines Leviticus 1918. So go to Leviticus and look at, uh, at chapter 19 verse 18, it says you shall not take vengeance nor bear any grudge against the sons or your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself.
I am the Lord. So that’s what Jesus is telling us right there. The two greatest commandments, love the Lord, your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind. That’s the first, then the second. One’s what love your neighbor as your. Okay. That that is just wonderful. How, how, how, how he takes the part of the law and combines them into a summary for us, it makes it really easiest for us.
Right. And our love of God has got to be sincere. Guys. It’s got to be sincere. It can’t just be in a word or tongue. Right? You can. I mean, think about it, you know, when somebody means something, when they really mean it from their heart, versus just, they’re just giving you a lip surface. We’ve all got lip service before, you know, and that I don’t like it.
It’s terrible. And I tell you what, we cannot do that as believers, you know, all of our love has gotta be bestowed upon him. That’s it? That’s it. And then, and if we do that and if we truly live our life that way and we’re going love others. Okay. So all the powers of the soul, everything that we have has got to be engaged and carried towards.
He wants it all guys. I mean, let’s face it. Jesus. He wants it all. If we give him our heart, if we actually give it to him, then we will be fulfilled. Right? So to love with our soul, with your soul, what does that mean? That’s completely all in everything and that’s hard. This is really hard to do, to be all in on everything because we, we have this, this fleshly nature.
We want what we. When we want, how we want, and that’s not what hits down. It’s, it’s not what it’s saying right here. You know, we have to get, just get rid of, of, of what we desire and seek him. And then he talks about love our neighbors as ourselves. That is hard. Can you, can you, can you just think about this?
We’re always wanting to take care of number one. That’s just human nature. We won’t take care of ourself and Jesus is saying, you know what? Take care of your neighbor. Like you take care of your. That’s tough. That’s tough. You know, and, and, and this, when we think about doing that and serving others, you know, just think called self love and that’s corrupt, right?
Uh, and it’s the root of a lot of sin. You know, we gotta put that off. It can’t be about ourselves. The self love, uh, is, is, is, is just wrong. We need to be loving others. And have a concern for the welfare of others. And by doing that, having that genuine concern for others and for, for, for their salvation, then we are taking care of our own souls and our bodies, you know, and it has to be sincere again, again, it’s not, it can’t be lip service.
You can’t just say now I pat you on back. Yeah. I’m praying for you. How about actually stop and pray for ever thought about. When somebody brings you something up or prayer request or something like that. And instead of just saying, well, I won’t pray for you. How about saying, well, can I pray for you right now?
I know that’s really hard to think about. And some of you guys are like, there’s no way on the planet that I would wanna do that, but I’m telling you, it will transform you. It will transform you. Cause if we’re gonna love our neighbors as ourselves, and we’re gonna deny ourselves for the good of others.
Now we gotta start stepping up and, and truly serving them. Okay. And these are two commandments, these and these two, and these two commandments that Jesus gave us, they are at the heart of what the transformation looks like. Right. That’s it. So, I mean, think about your family. What is, is most important to Jesus should be most important in our family, right?
He’s not focusing on obedience here. Right. But he’s focusing on. Love and relationships. Right? Love and relationships. First love to God. That’s gotta be first then to our neighbors. Right? And then your neighbors in this scenario, they could be the people in your home, your spouse, your kids, or maybe your actual closest neighbors.
Right. But the people around you, but we need to love them. You know, just, just what is he telling? Greatest commandment, love the Lord, God with all your heart and all your soul, all your mind, and then love your neighbor as yourself. And when you start thinking about how can I love someone as myself, that’s convicting.
It’s very convicting for me, for sure. Cuz I mean I’m, Chris’s biggest fan , you know, I I’ve, I I’ve always tried to, to have the mindset, trying to take care of myself. I wanna do for myself and, and how can I get better? And all these things aren’t bad. A lot of these things are, are, are, are trying to get better for the Lord.
But at the end of the day, if all I care about is making Chris better, I completely missed it. And I don’t want that. And I don’t want that for you guys. There’s nothing wrong with improving. Don’t get me wrong. What I’m saying here, like you to, to get better, to grow, to grow spiritually, that’s what we should be striving for.
You know, that, and, and Jesus is not saying not to do that, but he’s saying, make sure you focus on the right things. If you focus on the right stuff, good things happen and focus on him and focus on others. And if you do that, if you keep that at your, at the core of who you are of loving God, loving others, beautiful things will happen.
They will, but you have to lean into this. You have to make this a reality guys. Okay. So again, this script’s right here. Matthew 22 36, 2 39. Go. Get this one, highlight this stuff in your, in your Bible. Read it, write it on, on a note card. Get this one submitted in. Love the Lord you got with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind.
Love your neighbor as yourself. So guys this week, what can you expect when you come back for our big episode on Wednesday? I’m just gonna say this. It’s gonna be crazy. Cool. Okay. I got a crazy cool guy. That’s going to blow your mind. He’s gonna blow you away with how he and his wife. Created the family for the ages.
It’s just unreal. What this, this, this man has done, what they’ve done together. Uh, guys, I’m telling you, these are resources, a conversation that’s gonna be truly impactful. It’s gonna help you grow. It’s gonna help you be the leader of your predestine to be. It’s gonna help you step up at home. It’s gonna help you step up at work, all, all areas of your life.
Crazy cool ideas from this guy. So the question that week I want, that I want you to think about is how does your. Right now, how’s your family story playing out. Cause if it’s not playing out the way you had hoped or the way you had had dreamed about it’s okay, there’s time. You can fix it. You can get it on the right track, but you cannot get it on the right track alone.
You have to seek God. He has to be at the head of your family. And if he’s at the head of your family, beautiful things will. So guys, you know, this, the, the, the line within us, we’re here to serve Christian men and we not, we know not everybody listening. You may not be a believer. That’s okay. We love you too, but I wanna take opportunity real quick here.
If you’ve never put your trust in Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and savior, today is the day you could begin our relationship with him right now. He’s waiting for you. And it’s real simple guys. It’s real simple. Just need to admit that you’re a center. Okay. You just need to say, you know what? I admit that I’m a sin.
I fall short the glory of God. I know that that, that I have a center’s heart and look, we all do. And, and, and the world out there is, is teaching is telling us that we’re just good people, or we have struggles, no we’re centers, we’re centers and need a savior submit that. Then you need to believe, you need to believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God.
You know, he came down, he, he fulfilled his, his. What he was supposed to do here on earth. He was crucified on the cross, laid in a tomb, but three days later, the tomb did not hold him. He came out, he has risen. He is sitting at the right hand of the father right now. No one gets to the father except through him.
And you need to believe that and not just say it truly believe it. And then confess, confess it that he is your. You know what Lord, I can’t do this alone. I need you. I need you to take me to show me, to guide me. And you know what? At that moment, the holy spirit will be inside you. And that will be the voice, that little voice you hear, that will be the voice that guides you, that shows you.
But it, you cannot unleash lion within until you get the holy spirit leading your life. So if you’ve never made that confession, if you’ve never committed your life, let it be today. The hard part comes in the second command where He instructs us to love others as ourselves. Not only is that difficult and counter to the cultural norm of today it is seemingly impossible. That would be absolutely true if it were not for the awesome power of the Holy Spirit.
As you consider these verses think about your family. How are they seeing you love them on a regular basis. This is not talking about money but what experiences do they see that align your behaviors with what Jesus is instructing us here.
Let these verses soak in and come back as we unpack how to apply these words into your daily walk at home.
Now that you have your weekly kick in the pants it is time to get out and unleash the Lion Within!
