Welcome to The Lion Within Us, a podcast serving Christian men who are hungry to be the leaders God intends you to be. I’m your host, chris Granger. Let’s jump in. All right, fellas, fun Friday time. You ready to go? I am, let’s get after it.
00:16
So we’re going to start off in the Word of God And this week we’ve been looking at Nehemiah. Okay, nehemiah, chapter six, only one verse, so it ain’t too bad for you guys. And I sent messengers unto them saying I am doing a great work so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease whilst I leave it and come down to you? Great verse, right there, guys, i’m telling you, if you are struggling with your calendar, if you’re struggling to prioritize and getting things done, this verse means something. Go to the spiritual kickoff. I really took a lot of time to unpack that one. I got real practical in ways that I struggle with this and areas I need to do better myself. So I’m telling you, fellas it’s not just me here, i know if you’re listening to this you have an opportunity to grow And to go closer to Christ by simplifying and applying God’s words. Go, check out that spiritual kickoff and remember we do those spiritual kickoffs every day in the line with Dennis. So if you’re not joined that community yet or joined the daily spiritual kickoff group that we just started, here’s your opportunity. Go out, check the line within that US. We have places on that main page for you to do that. Okay, now, if you missed the conversation with Tim Timberlake, what a fun, really practical conversation with him around the power of 1440. There’s 1440 minutes in every day, guys, and that’s all we get. So we need to understand what we can do as Christian men to make the most of those. Okay, and we start thinking about our calendar. You have to get real intentional. You have to really start prioritizing what’s important. I love how he says God and family they get the best, everybody else gets the rest. This simple little mindset, things like that. Do those audits? We talked a lot about time audit. How do you go through and check and make sure you know what I’m giving God, what’s best here? but I need to do a better job here. I’m spending too much here and not enough time here. Do the audits Write it down So many times? if you just write stuff down, it just becomes clear as day, right, right in front of you.
02:17
His morning routine I thought was incredible. If you missed that part, what he does 15 minutes. 15 minutes when alarm goes off or he gets out of bed. There’s what he does. First five he’s just listening to God. Now, trick, it is first five minutes.
02:32
Guys, don’t fall back asleep, okay, i don’t need to sit up, but just be quiet, be still and listen to God. Second five minutes study one scripture. He literally talks about one verse and just chew on one verse for five minutes. Maybe this Nehemiah 6-3, it was what’d be when you wanna try tomorrow. Then, after that, five minutes in prayer just talking to your father. Let him know what the spirits reveal to you in that one verse. Ask him to God direct you throughout the day, help you apply that verse, and then from there you got 15 minutes with him before you even get out of the bed, guys, powerful scripture right there or not scripture? powerful tip right there to apply scripture into our walk, and that’s what it’s all about. But that first five minutes, don’t miss that. This is something that I struggle with myself. But just being still, just let God speak to you. You’re never gonna hear him if you’re always talking. You gotta be still and let him speak to you. So he talked a lot about that stuff, guys, but he basically he ended up there on staying hungry, how we need to be constantly, have that desire to have that relationship with God. That should drive everything we do And from there, if we’re driving closer to God, everything we do, the rest just falls into place, guys, it really does. It gets a lot easier when we get out of our all way and start following God.
04:03
So hopefully you enjoyed that conversation with Tim. I loved it. First of all, he’s from Preetmore, where it’s just right around the corner. I literally go to church in Preetmore, so I look for prayerfully to be able to meet him face to face one day, shake his hand and maybe I’m not gonna play ping pong with him, though He tipped me out there, so I’m not gonna play ping pong, but maybe we can just get out and just have an opportunity to meet that brother in Christ. So, looking forward to that and really enjoy that conversation with Tim.
04:27
So let’s get into our tips. Fun Friday we’re gonna have a health tip, a wealth tip, a self tip. Health’s all about mind and body. Wealth’s about career and finances. Self is about being better husbands and dads. So your health tip. This really aligns well to Tim and the message he had. We need to realize that.
04:47
No, it’s not a four letter word. You gotta protect your schedule and no one to turn stuff down, and if you can do this effectively, that is a really good mark of an effective leader. Be fine yourself saying yes to everything. I mean guys, you gotta be careful here, because the next thing you know, you’re gonna yes yourself to where you can’t have any time to do anything but just barely breathe. Now I get there’s so many things on our calendars that are really good I mean really good stuff but you have to be careful because every time you say yes to something, you’re losing an opportunity to do something else. That’s just a reality. It’s kind of, if you look at opportunity costs from a financial standpoint, same type of deal. Or you’re losing an opportunity. So if you spend money here, you’ve lost just lost opportunity to spend this money in another place, right? Same type of thing with our time. So you have to be super intentional about this And I mean our calendars. Busy does not equate good. You guys heard me talk about this in the past, so we need to understand that.
05:45
No, it’s okay to say that And then maybe you need to give yourself some barrier. When we had this brown brought up in our community, where an entrepreneur he mentioned, you know what I like to say yes to everything because I’m fearful by saying no I’m not gonna get that opportunity back. And my feedback to him was, instead of saying yes, just ask, hey, i need to think about it, i need some time. Don’t make the decision in the moment. Give yourself that little buffer to make the decision And then from there, you’ll make the right decision. Right Why? Because you’re gonna take it to the Lord, you’re gonna pray about it, you’re gonna give yourself some space, a good mental space, to make the decision the way that God would have you do, okay. So, guys, that’s a really good tip there. Don’t forget that. No, it’s not a four letter word. It’s okay to say no, it’s okay. Just be careful. We’re just not falling into that yes trap all the time. Okay, all right.
06:37
Now our wealth tip. This week I’m gonna pull this again. So many of these tips I pulled from Candy Valentino, from this wealth habits, and this is another one where she talks about long term versus short term capital gains. Okay, now, short term gains is that you realize that short term gain when you profit from selling an asset within a year of owning it. Okay, so this can be a negative impact on your taxes, guys, because a short term gain can be taxed at ordinary income.
07:04
So an example, right? Let’s just say you knock back six figures back an asset of nine to five. Let’s say you’re making 100K, just for simple math, and you sell a property that you invested in, but you only had that thing for six months. You sell that property. You make another 100K. Well, guess what, when you go to pay your taxes, you’re gonna be paying taxes on $200,000. Because you have your nine to five to 100K. Your 100K you made on that property because you sold it within a year.
07:30
Okay, and depending on how you that fixing your tax practice and stuff, that can really have a big implication. Now let’s say you have a, you want to do this from a long term standpoint. You realize that long term gain only when you profit all the profits you from selling a profit when you hail the asset for a year longer. Okay, so if you can wait, you can wait 12 months to sell it until the basic anniversary of your purchase, plus one day you are gonna keep more of your profit. Why is that? Because that long term capital gains is a much lower rate, okay, than your standard ordinary earn gains. So just keep that in mind, guys, that your standard ordinary earn gains is a different tax rate than the long term gains, And anytime you have an opportunity to move something to a long term, you want to do that. So you just got to keep that in mind When you’re thinking through investment properties.
08:22
Usually, this is usually related to property. You know real estate. You want to be able to hold onto that, those assets, but it could also be stocks and bonds, things like that. The same type of rules apply, but, depending on the amount of your income, you may not have to pay any capital gains tax. Okay, because if you let’s just say, for instance, you and your spouse make $74,000 per year combined and you’re filing jointly, okay, your long term capital gains are tax free because the tax rate for your income level is zero, okay, and so in that case, you get to keep every cent of profits you make when you sell property. So that’s a great way to get some additional savings right here, guys, when selling assets, and why you want to consider holding onto your assets a little bit longer. You got to have a little bit of that longer term strategy. When you’re going into this, remember wealth building is not a short term sprint. It usually is a long term run, okay, marathon. So keep that in mind. All right, now your self tip okay, kind of moving along the lines of being a better husband and a better dad.
09:22
Quality time should occur daily. What does Tim say? He gives the best time to God and to his family. They get the best. Everybody else gets the rest right. This looks a lot different to a lot for everybody.
09:36
Okay, but don’t wait for an event to be on your counter for quality time to occur. Just think about this for a second. It shouldn’t be something that you have to always schedule Now. Maybe sometimes you do Like right now, at the time of this recording. We’re planning a trip to the zoo here in a few weekends. So, yeah, that’s a quality time on the schedule with the family that we’re planning for. But tonight, when my kids get home from school, just in this evening, when everybody gets home and we finish having supper, nobody’s gonna have to tell me first of all to you know, we’re gonna have supper together. No, we won’t have that. We won’t have that quality time Then, because we’re in softball season at the time of this recording, we’re gonna go out into the 2DR, we’re gonna throw some softball around, we’re just gonna have that quality time together. And then tonight we’ll have that quality time with my wife. I’ll hopefully sit down with Becca, talk about her day, just have that time to connect with her.
10:27
So quality time should happen daily. I love how Tim says to God family, they get the best. Everybody else, guys, they need to get the rest. And that can be hard. That can be hard because you’re pulling so many directions. So you have to be super intentional about this and start prioritizing that day. Okay, again, that can also be this quality time, not just with your spouse, but with your kids too. All right, they’re your health tip, well-tip and self-tip. Again, that health tip no, it’s not a four little word, guys. You can say no, it’s okay. Well-tip, really consider that long-term versus short-term capital gains when you start thinking through investments. And then your self-tip quality time should occur on a daily basis.
11:10
