In this episode:
What if there was a divine power that could fuel your potential as a leader?
Let’s unleash this force by surrendering to Jesus, tailoring our inner circle to reflect our spiritual goals, and focusing on health, wealth and self.
How does your identity as a child of God shape you? You're not defined by your past, by all the bad stuff you've done, or all the great stuff you've done either. Christ defines you. You are a child of God Click To Tweet Chris Grainger

Welcome to The Lion Within Us, a podcast serving Christian men who are hungry to be the leaders God intends you to be. I’m your host, chris Granger. Let’s jump in. All right, guys, it’s fun Friday time, and before we get started, let’s get into the word, okay? So our scripture this week in the book of Romans, chapter eight, verse 17, says Now, if we are children, then we are heirs heirs of God and co heirs with Christ. If indeed we share in his sufferings and order that we may also share in his glory Man.
00:36
I love that verse. It speaks to me. It’s something that, guys, i think we need to spend more time understanding what’s available. When we surrender to the Lordship of Christ, you become a co heir, a royal priesthood. You may be thinking it ain’t nothing wrong about me. No, you’re wrong. You are wrong. That’s the lies of the evil one. You, right now, once you surrender to Jesus as your savior, you are co heir of Christ. That should get you so fired up on this fun Friday. I don’t know what else I can say. I should just be a mic drop moment. We just won’t grow any further. But I know you want to hear some tips and things like that, so we will. But seriously, guys, go check that spiritual kickoff episode out. I spent a lot of time on that, on that one to try to get help. You see the power that exists that he will give you if you submit to him and you are his child. You may think that nobody can love you. I’m here to tell you that is wrong. God loves you and he wants a relationship with you. So open up and give him a chance.
01:37
Now, if you missed the conversation with Parker from Buck Commander man, that was a fun one. Did not see a few of those things coming for sure on his testimony, Didn’t realize that he had the issue of pornography that he talked about. They’re appreciative of him being open and honest about that and just sharing that with you guys, because there’s so many of us out there that I know I hear from you guys a lot that are struggling with stuff like that. And you see guys like that who are maybe they’re crushing it. They’re running Buck Commander, they’re hanging out. Willie Robertson and Luke Bryant and Jason Abdeen Oh sure, this guy’s got it all together. That could be your attitude. Totally get it. Well, you heard. No, it’s not always cupcakes and rainbows, right, there’s some struggles.
02:16
He had to go through some things and that going through some things helped him. But look, he didn’t go through those things alone. He had strong Christian men that were helping guide him, pull him back, give him that nudge he needed to know You know what You headed down a bad path. He even mentioned the five friend things. You guys heard me talk about that in the past too. You’re you’re in that result of five people you spend the most time with. I’m just telling you, be careful, because if those, those people, if they’re pulling you further from God, they are going to be successful. I’m gonna say that again If the five people you spend the most time with are pulling you further and further from God, they’re gonna be successful. You need to be surrounding yourself with those that are pulling you closer to God, that are challenging you to walk with Him better, that are challenging you to give up the things that you know you need to give up in order to walk with Him. Okay, so really go back. Listen to that conversation. I learned so much from Parker. Just so fine, fine young man had to spend some time with him. Crazy how we got to meet on the airplane when I was headed to Louisiana and just have a wonderful spirit-led conversation at 30,000 feet, and that led to this podcast, guys. So, just again, hopefully you guys get a chance to listen to that one. I was, for sure, a fun one for me, and just the way God orchestrated all that for that to come to fruition. Just to go to show you his plans. They’re a lot better than ours, you know. All.
03:40
Right now let’s get into our fun Friday tips. Okay, so for our new listeners, we do a health, wealth and self-tip each week. Now, the health tip focuses on your mind and your body. The wealth tip is either gonna be talking about careers or finances, and self-tip is generally geared towards being better husbands and better dads. Okay, so our health tip this week is something that I’ve been struggling with lately.
04:02
I want to just bring this up for you guys to remember. You can’t outrun the fork. Now, what I mean by that? okay, i’m a big workout guy. I work out every day of the week. There’s no off days, seriously. I mean even when I go to the kids camp. I’m recording this right after I finished my with my 11 year old daughter her camp, i ran every morning or I did a ruck every morning. There are some, so there are no off days, but you cannot outrun that fork.
04:29
Bad eating habits will beat out any progress you make in the gym period. It will. So the first place you always gotta get started when you start thinking about how you can make an improvement, where you need to start really tuning up, you need to start thinking about your nutrition first. Okay, nutrition is everything. Guys, if you put junk in, you’re gonna get junk out. We all know that, right? So, seriously, don’t go killing yourself at the gym for three hours a day, or two hours a day or whatever, and then you go on and be bussed up a bag of Oreos, right? Or you’re eating a bunch of processed food.
05:03
Now again, i’m preaching to the choir here. I know this is something I struggle with myself, so I’m not trying to tell you guys, i got all this stuff figured out. But I do know one thing If you are intentional about this, if you’re intentional about your intake, you will have a bigger impact on your goals. And you also need to have some micro goals, okay. So don’t feel like, hey, i just need to lose 30 pounds. No, let’s break it down. I need to lose 30 pounds by wind. What are some steps I can take this week is to move closer towards that goal. And if the 30 pound goal, that’s a big, hairy, audacious goal And it’s cool to have B-hags in our life okay, i totally get that. But we need to break those goals down, okay. So just make sure you understand you can’t outrun or you can’t out-exercise the four Okay. So really be intentional about this And this is an area you want to start focusing on Instead of trying to figure out what workout plan I need to get on and get started with. Start looking at what do I need to do with my plate every day to start making a difference there. You get that fix first. The workout stuff will be much easier, okay. Now your wealth tip. Kind of on the same theme.
06:11
I’m not sure I was on a food kick for this podcast, but here we are. I want you to audit your food budget. Think about that for a second. Audit your food budget. Take one month and dig into where every cent goes towards food. Now, this includes your groceries. You’re stopping by, you know a quick stop where a convenient store gets some snacks, obviously eating out, lunches, dinners, breakfast, whatever that is. Take all this information, gather it all, collect it, and then I want you to sit back and really spend some time to understand the numbers And then see what can be adjusted. And here’s the target for you Can you move that number down 10%? You may not be able to, but here’s the thing to consider with this Bulk shopping.
06:55
Look for some areas or some items that you guys go through on a consistent basis as a family and try to figure out. Can you do bulk purchases that will save you money? Maybe you need to remove some items from that list completely. You know processed food, junk food, potato chips, all the things that we know we don’t need to have that end up in there. Do you need to set a hard line on that? Okay, and even consider alternative sources. And what does this mean? Well, there’s some food, fellas, that you can grow or shoot and fill your freezer or your refrigerator yourself.
07:29
Okay, and think about this. Sometimes we often just budget for food because we have to eat. So we have to be good stewards of this. Okay, it’s not just because we got to eat. Be a good steward while you’re doing this and learn, develop good habits, learn. What do you want to be providing for your family. I’m telling you, if you start making this shift, this mindset shift, you’re a little more intentional in this area. It’s going to become so much more natural for you. Okay, All at your food budget and then start digging into it. Now for your self tip.
08:06
I got a question for you. So this is dropping towards the middle of August right now. So we’re in the summer months, we’re getting close to Labor Day. You may be listening to this later, summer may be past, but either way, this question applies What memories have you made this summer with your kids? Now, i did not ask you what trips have you been on? That’s where we’re going to go immediately. I’ve been on this vacation or this camp, or we got this plan. Now you want to ask what memories have you made? Okay, now it’s not too late. It doesn’t have to cost you a ton of money either.
08:40
Create an adventure. This. Literally, guys can be exploring a park, you know, with your kids. And if they’re young enough, hey, just pretend you’re GI Joe or something, your army man, and just go explore a park, get a couple of sticks and just play army with them. I’m telling you, it’s a little stuff like that Act silly, act silly, make them laugh. There’s nothing to be. We can’t underestimate the power of can a silly string. I’m just here to tell you. You know, i went to Sermon camp with my 11 year old and one of the big things they do has to do with shaving cream, and you spray and shaving cream on that. I have a wonderful picture with me and her. I’m head to toe with shaving cream, she’s head to toe with shaving cream. We’re laughing. We made a memory That’s going to be a core memory for her. No doubt about it. Right Now, do we have to get some cleanup afterwards? Yes, was it the clean up the funnest? No, but would I trade it for anything in the world? Absolutely not, absolutely not. It’s a wonderful memory that we’re I was able to make with her.
09:43
My challenge to myself is I need to be more attention about making more memories. You do too. So the summer is almost over. If you got kids you’ve heard me say this before You only get 18 summers. Then most of your kids are out of the house by then. And this is hard for me to think about, because I have a 12, she’ll be 13 here this summer, and to think that I only get five more with her. That’s something that brings me. It’s hard to talk about. Well, how fast it goes, guys, how fast it goes. So be intentional here. Make some memories. Don’t worry about the big trips. If you’re able to do that, fine, great. But make sure on those trips you have time to make memories too, and we’re not just clicking pictures on our cell phone, but you’re actually connecting with your kids, making memories that count. All right, fellas, there are your three tips your health tip You cannot run the fort. Your health tip audit your food budget. And your self tip You need to make some memories with your kids.
10:45
Okay, all right now for your book of the week this week. I don’t have a copy here with me. I got to see a copy when I was in West Monroe, but it’s your daily fill, phil. Okay, so this has a hundred devotionals that Phil Robertson put out. They cover God-honoring principles, fellas, that include committing to the life of Christ and of his words, tells about the importance of understanding, kindness, respect, hard work and financial stewardship. It tells about enjoying God’s creation here, with earth, animals and each other, and he does it from a very interesting way. He does some storytelling, but he also just hits you the way Phil does with unflinching honesty, guys. So I’m telling you what this is a great one to add to your resources. Again, it’s only a hundred day devotion, but it’s a great way you can read it over and over again. I’ll share it with others, maybe share it with the outdoor buddy of yours.
11:39
Again, kind of sticking with that theme of Buck Commander, duck Commander, things like that. I wanted to pull something from their resources that I thought you guys would really it would resonate well. So your daily fill we’ll try to have a link in the show notes for you guys. There You can definitely go to this episode webpage or you can also go to the lionwithinus slash book and you’ll see our entire book of the week list, guys. So every week when we do a book of the week, we put it on that site. So I’ve shared that out with guys in the past too. Hey, what are some books I should be reading? I just sent them the link. Hey, just pick any of these. They’re all good. I’ve read pretty much all of them. Some of them don’t have a direct Christian theme, some of them are more business related, but we try to make sure all the stuff that applies to good, solid truth that will help you grow in leadership.
12:27
Okay, now dad joke time. Who’s ready for this? So I got one that submitted from one of our community members and then one that I got myself. So, dad joke number one I got fired from the bank today. A man came in and asked me to check his balance, so I pushed him. So that was submitted by our member, clifford Curtin. And Clifford, he’s a great guy. I was able to actually have a conversation with Clifford recently, got to meet him and learn a little bit about him and his family. So thank you, my friend, for sending that one in.
12:58
Now for sure, easy way to get connected with us and get your dad jokes on the show is be a part of our community. I could like to allow those jokes from our guys and we’re going to put them out there. We’ll give you a shout out. So thank you again, clifford, for getting that to us. My man, dad joke number two what do you call a mouse that swears? A cursor? of course, come on now, guys. You should have got that one. So, number one I got fired from the bank. Today. A man came and asked me to check his balance, so I pushed him. Number two what do you call a mouse that swears A cursor? There you go, there you go. So remember, i rolls, count. The more I rolls, the better. I have found. That is my check point with my wife, my 13, my 12, almost 13 year old. That one, if I can get a good eye roll, that makes the cut All right, fellas.
13:44
So your question of your week, this week I want you to think about this seriously How does your identity as a child of God shape you? Think about that for a second. Your identity, you’re not defined by your past. You’re not defined by all the bad stuff you’ve done or all the great stuff you’ve done either. Right, if you absolutely are crushing it in life and maybe you have a seven-figure bank account and you’re rocking around with a truck that you want to ride and you do all the vacations, all the trips, great, that doesn’t find you. Christ defines you. You are a child of God, so how does that shape you? How does that influence you moving forward, the decisions that you make? the person that shows up will no one’s watching. That’s the question that you need to sit this weekend, ponder and think about. All right guys. So there you go your Fun Friday. Share this out with others, give us a rating and review.
14:39
