In this episode:
Picture this – you’re sat in a room with a man in his 80s radiating pure joy and passion for life.
That man is Barry McGuire from McGuire Wax Company, and today we recap how to navigate our spiritual journey. We touch on the profound message of 2 Corinthians 4:18, encouraging a shift of focus from the fleeting material world to the unseen and eternal. Barry’s insights are truly inspiring, and his zeal for life is infectious, reminding us that worldly pleasures are simply temporary satisfaction.
I've interviewed hundreds of people over a couple of years, and I'm trying to remember someone who's had as much joy as Barry. I don't know if anybody checks that box. Click To Tweet Chris Grainger

Welcome to the Lion Within Us, a podcast serving Christian men who are hungry to be the leaders gotta tend you to be. I’m your host, chris Stranger. Let’s jump in. All right, fellas, fun Friday time. I’m excited to have you here. Let’s dig into it. We’re gonna get right into God’s Word. Those that are gonna get us started.
00:18
We’re in the book of 2 Corinthians. Okay, 2 Corinthians, chapter 4. I’m only looking at one verse, though, verse 18. It says so we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. So I love that verse.
00:36
Right there, fellas, go back and check out our spiritual kickoff. It really took some time to unpack that, obviously to simplify and apply it to our life, but to really show you how we can chase so many things in this world that are just that in this world. And remember, when we get to heaven, the only thing you’ll have are other people. That’s it. That’s the only thing you can take there. So I don’t care how much you’re crushing it. The amazing house you live in, the awesome car, you got all the money you have to bank, it doesn’t matter. All that stuff is gonna be temporary, should you do the best you can right now here on earth, absolutely, but focusing on the eternal? Oh, man, that changes everything, okay. So hopefully you guys got a chance to listen to that spiritual kickoff.
01:22
And also, how about that guest man from Barry McGuire, from McGuire Wax Company? Amazing conversation, being in his 80s to where he’s rocking and rolling, he’s out there doing the work that God’s calling him to do His fire, this is absolute fire. Been married for over 60 years Actually, no, it’s coming up on a 60 year anniversary, if I remember correctly and man, just such a cool guy, such a cool guy. I’ve interviewed just so many hundreds of people over a couple of podcasts that I’ve worked on for years now, and I’m trying to remember someone who’s had as much joy as Barry. I don’t know if anybody checks that box I’m sure there are a couple guys that come close but he smiled the entire time. He was amped up the entire time we fed, I prayed for him before we got started recording I always do that with our guests and we finished. He was just talking, smiling. Next thing, he was just praying a prayer of abundance and prosperity over me and the lioness and he’s just. That’s just who he is. You can’t hide it, you can’t fake that there’s. You know it’s just who he is. It comes out into his actions and everywhere. So hopefully that’s what you guys picked up on. That’s what I picked up on the most was just his genuineness. It was real, it was authentic. I didn’t think they’re not very maguire. So hopefully you guys enjoyed that love and know what your thoughts were on it. Let me know for sure and and and again check out all the resources and links on that episode through ways that you can spread the gospel with others.
02:58
So let’s get into our fun Friday tips. I know you guys enjoy those on Friday. So we got our health tip, or a well tip, and our self tip. Quick reminder Health is mind and body, wealth is career and finances. Self is being better husbands and dads. So the health tip actually came from our community. So a gentleman named Doug Mills you guys have heard me talk about Doug before. He’s a great guy in our community, very active. He brought this up in one of our meetings. I cannot remember if it was a Bible study or or a lion launch. It was one of our meetings where Doug was a participant. It could have been a mastermind, but he uses the acronym HALT, h-a-l-t.
03:34
Okay, and it says never let yourself get hungry, angry, lonely or tired. One of those four things happen. You’re the Satan that’s gonna attack. I just thought that was a pretty good acronym to remember Hungry, angry, lonely, tired. Let’s think about it. You get hungry, you know. I mean Snickers has made a fortune off of you know you’re not yourself. You’re hungry, right? So we totally get that. I don’t want you to get angry. When you get angry, you’re not firing all the right cylinders, I’m telling you, for when I get angry I can’t. I better not be engaging with my kids or my wife, because I’m probably saying something I shouldn’t say. Or loneliness we live in an epidemic of loneliness. I’m telling you guys, it’s everywhere. There’s so many guys that are so disconnected, so lonely. You know we have these cell phones now, these smartphones that keep us more connected than ever in the world. Yet we’re more disconnected and Satan’s gonna, he’s gonna attack when you’re lonely. And the last one, don’t mess this one tired. I know you guys are out there. You’re crushing it. You’re doing all these things, you try to bootstrap it. You never stop. You’re working all these hours. End of the day, you’re gonna get wore out, you’re gonna get tired, and when you get tired, you’re gonna get attacked. Satan, think about when you watch National Geographic and there’s a picture of a bunch of gazelle out of the field. Well, who comes to lion? Which one’s gonna get attacked? The strong one in the middle? No, it’s a little weak one. The tired one wanna keep, can’t keep up, right, that’s the one he’s going after. That’s what Satan’s gonna go after too. So remember that. Thank you, doug, for this Halt. Never let yourself get too hungry, angry, lonely, tired. Satan’s gonna attack. All right now, wealth tip. I want you guys to remember something Persistence pays off. Okay, persistence pays off. Building wealth takes time and you have to be persistent. Okay, you have to. If you have big goals, think about this. You do not need to listen people with small vision. Think about that. You need to. If you have big goals, don’t listen to people with small vision. You need to care more about your dreams than other people’s opinions. Period, as long as your dreams align with God’s will, that’s what matters. That can be so hard in this world that we live in, okay, cause we’re trying to keep up with the Joneses and we forget that the Joneses are broke. But if we align our decisions based on what God desires, right, then if the rest of the world sees that as weird, then fine, just be weird and have a peace with it. But just remember it’s persistence. It’s not talking about replaying the lottery or getting rich quick. No, it’s about being persistent, being diligent and understanding that you’re gonna take a financial standpoint with your, with the finances that God blesses with you with, to be that steward that he has called you to be. And that may be real estate. For some of you guys that may be mutual funds. For some of you guys that may be just looking at 401k or just being a better budgeter, where ever cause, everybody’s in different places. So far as their wealth building journey, okay, a lot of guys who are on the back, on the one end of the spectrum, they’re in that wealth accumulation mode, right when they’re just building up that wealth up so that they can ultimately have that retirement wherever that looks like in the future. Oh, it’s a lot of people that I’ve talked with are in that debt reduction because the world’s told them wrong for so long. Actually, you know, they’re swimming in debt. They’re trying to figure out how to get out of that. So, wherever you are on that pendulum, just know, just be the best steward. And you have to remember that persistence pays off, okay. So just don’t think that it’s a one and done type deal. Usually it doesn’t work that way. But the guy who’s out there consistently and persistently doing the right things and exercising good stewardship, at that moment, at that moment when you start doing those things, you can expect hey, you’re showing good stewardship, good financial decisions and from there you can build a wealth. Okay, all right now. Self-tip. This came from our community as well, a gentleman named Lucas Jordan. I love Lucas to death. He’s a big time advocate of us, listens to the show all the time. He’s engaged with our mastermind. He’s engaged with our Bible study a couple of nights. Lucas comes to so many events. He comes to our daily spiritual kickoff a lot. He’s just out there, he’s on fire. He’s doing some great things. He has a powerful testimony and he brought this one up in a meeting we had. He says you need to connect before you correct. I just thought that was beautiful Connect before you correct. So quick. So often, as guys we correct, we go straight to correction mode. Right, we see what’s going wrong and we check Boom, why do you have to do that? Do it this way, or when you stop, or things like that. I do it too. Look, I’m talking to myself a lot right here, okay. But instead, if we can connect with others first, from there we can help them, show them the correct path. But you have to connect first. So, yes, I’m nearly thinking about being a better husband and a better dad when I heard this one. This is also a great tip to use when you’re evangelizing, when you’re trying to share your faith with others, the way Barry was talking about a great way is to just connect first. Just connect with them, ask questions, seek first to understand, then you can seek to be understood. So, just making sure that you’re doing this out of true care for others, humility, that you’re not just trying to be self-righteous, that you’re actually care about the individual right and you can’t fake that. You can’t fake empathy, because people smell it. So connect, then you can move to correction. So I just hopefully that tip serves you. What guys will, particularly for you? Married guys out there, or what ones that have little kids? You gotta remember that connection part, don’t forget that. Okay, so you have three tips halt, don’t let yourself get hangry. Hangry, that’s funny. Hungry, angry, lonely, tired, right? Or maybe you can just combine HNA and just be hangry. We know that’s a slang word. Then the well tip remember that persistence pays off, fellas. It’s all about being persistent and your self-tip connect before you correct the book of the week this week we talked about on Wednesday right here, fellas, ignite your life. This is what Barry sent me, a copy of it. It’s not a bad read. It’s not a long read, let’s see. It’s about 160 something pages, but there are a lot of scripture references in here. There’s even some QR codes in here that can take you directly to the website and things like that that he was talking about. So if you wanna check out the show notes right here for this episode, we’ll have links there for you guys to get hooked up with that copy of Ignite your Life. Okay, defeat fear with effortless faith. So that’s a tongue twister and of itself. All right, fellas, let’s get into our dad jokes. I know you a lot of you guys enjoy these, so we have two dad jokes today. One of them actually was submitted by someone who was a listener of the show, and I’m gonna give them a shout out here. But our very first one is describe failure in two words I can’t. So thank you, good fellow. So that’s dad joke number two, number one. Number two says to measure the quality of puns you must use a seismograph. So that was submitted by John Felt. Thank you, john, for that one man Really appreciate your submission. I was able to connect with John a while back, have a great conversation with him, looking forward to him joining the community. So thank you, john, for getting us that dad joke. Number one describe failure in two words I can’t. And number two to measure the quality of puns you must use a seismograph. So there you go, remember to sigh. Remember eye rolls count, so do sighs, guys. I’m telling you it just it works Okay. So thank you, john again. Let us know which one of you liked best. Number one, number two and the question going into the weekend, fellas, to think about we can talk about it all week what holds eternal significance versus mere passing moments? Just think about that Answer. That question means a lot. So it’s not just about what happened in today. Your circumstances change. I do pray happy for you guys. I don’t want you to run around miserable like a curmudgeon all the time. I want you to have happiness, but ultimately I want you to have joy and remember that happiness is tied too much to our circumstances. But you can find joy and joy exists and you have that personal relationship with Jesus as your savior. All right, fellas, we’ll get after it. Have a great day. Remember, share this stuff out.
