In this episode:
Are you ready to stand firm against life’s storms as Jesus did in the wilderness?
Let’s explore the momentous narrative of Christ’s temptation and discover how to arm ourselves with steadfast faith. I share insights on how trials can be transformative and how surrendering to Christ’s leadership is a pivotal step in any Christian man’s journey. It’s not a mere discussion; it’s a call to spiritual arms, guiding you towards growth and resilience. Together, we’ll learn from the Savior’s unshakable example to resist the devil’s schemes, ensuring that when temptation knocks, your foundation in Christ is unbreakable.
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Click To Tweet Matthew 4:1
Welcome to the Lion Within Us, a podcast serving Christian men who are hungry to be the leaders God intends you to be. I’m your host, chris Granger. Let’s jump in. All right, guys, it’s your spiritual kickoff. I’m excited to be here with you, so let’s dig right into the word together.
Okay, the word, the scripture of the week this week is going to be Matthew 4, chapter 1, verse 1, matthew 4, verse 1. It says then Jesus was led up by the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Now, chris, why in the world would you want to unpack this verse? Well, god’s us all beneficial forces to help us to grow. We can learn from it and we can apply it. So let’s dig into this one together. I’m excited for it, fellas, hopefully you are. So let’s just go. First of all, you know where’s Matthew. Again, we’re not going to assume anything on the line within us. So Matthew is the first gospel in the New Testament. Okay, now you had the Old Testament, everything leading up to Jesus. Then the New Testament Jesus will arise, okay.
So this is an interesting verse, really, and I wanted to pull this one out for us to think a little bit, because I know a lot of us are going through trials, we’re going through some temptation and I’ve often said you guys heard me say it plenty of times you’re either in a trial or coming out of a trial, or you’re either going to go into a trial right, and you know, I know for that to be true because we live in a fallen world and I was thinking some recently about the internal battles we all have that we all face day in and day out, and it can leave so many guys feeling defeated and you can start just feeling you know, you know I’m talking about. You start questioning things like well, why am I going through this? What’s the? Why do this at all? What’s the whole purpose behind it? Then I came to this verse, right, and I start thinking about how would I have felt if the spirit knowingly led me into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil? I’m going to be straight up with you, fellas, it didn’t sit well with me. I don’t know if I’m like that at all. Nobody wants that Mainly because I’m just a screwed up human and I don’t like to have trials, I don’t like to have struggles, I don’t like to have temptations because they’re hard, right.
But what we see right here, in this one verse, is Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God. He had just been baptized. Go back and check out the end of chapter three. He had just been baptized. The first things that happens in this, in this new spirit, with the center of enemas upon it like a dove, is he is led into the tent, into the wilderness, to be tempted in a scenario that’s out there. Guys, if you think about the story, it’s crazy, it’s absolutely crazy to think about. As soon as he gets baptized, boom, I’m going to test you. But I thought it was interesting because this is what happens to so many Christians, right, new Christians, they’re on fire, they’re out for the Lord, boom, I’m going to go tell everybody about it. And one little thing, hiccups, one little thing. And guess what? I ain’t walking with this, no more, it ain’t done no good for me. And flip right around and they’re going back, doing living away.
The world, the Bible talks about it. You know, the seed falls on that ground and it just sprouts up real quick and then, as soon as something comes, that sun just courses it right away. Right, we need to understand, guys, that the evil one is going to attack. Struggles are going to come and it’s going to show that, you know, we are shallow, yeah, we’re going to fade, but when we plant our feet firmly in Christ man, there’s something we learn there.
So we see, right here, jesus was led by the spirit, for and I think he was led for a couple of reasons. First, it was really God’s purpose. God wanted him to be tempted, right, he wanted to show the world that his son was sinless, that his son was worthy as a savior. That’s it, jesus. Right there, guys. He’s the only one that could pass this test, why? He’s God, he’s divine, it’s where he came from, right, he is sovereign, he is reverent, he is Lord, and we have to remember this. He not only just barely passed this test, he passed it with flying colors. He destroyed this test, right, only Christ.
Secondly, we know the evil one was going to try to best his, to do his best and destroying Jesus. Why? Because if he could pull that off, if he could destroy Jesus, if he could get Jesus on his side, he would thwart God’s plan, his plan of redemption for the entire world. So there was a ton riding on this for the evil one, because if he could just make Jesus just surrender and just go. You know what I’m gonna go your way. If he could just do that, then the whole script would have been flipped Right. Think about that for a second Right. So he was trying to disqualify Jesus as a savior. That’s right. That’s all he was trying to do. And all those things, right, he was trying to do. Think about what he was doing it with.
As he went through these temptations to evil one, he was using all the lures, all his tricks, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the pride of the eyes and the pride of life All that he could tempt Jesus in ways that would absolutely be mind blowing to us. We would fail immediately. But we knew those lures that he uses are just that. They’re traps, the traps that we can easily fall into, right? I mean, just think about how traps work out there. When you’re hunting Animals, don’t willingly fall into a trap. They fall into a trap and then they’re gone. Right, we see the same lures that the evil one is using them with, is using against us.
But the cool part about this particular verse is Jesus defeated them all. He defeated them. Right, we know that he was going to be out to be tempted by the evil one. But you keep reading. You know Jesus defeats them all. And we have to go through some stuff, fellas, I’m telling you, you have to go through some seasons, through some trials, through some sufferings in life to understand, to really to have that moment of clarity of what Christ has done for us, because that helps us recognize who we should be following Right and think about the stuff that we do in life.
All the temptations, why are these things in life come with certain accolades, certain status, all the certain things that we can grow up, our personal well-being of who we are. Are we trying to get those accolades of man Right or are we surrendering to the Lordship of Christ? And when we surrender to the Lordship of Christ, we can trust that when we find ourselves in the wilderness, when we find ourselves on that path and the evil one is attacking you know what, we’re not alone. We’re not alone Because those temptations fells, they’re gonna come. Whatever, think about this.
If you were the evil one, how would you attack you? How would you take you down and then start looking for it? For some guys it may be money, for some it may be lusts, it may be other women. For some guys it may be status, maybe the number of followers on Instagram, right, it may be the type of job you have or your title, whatever those things are. Whatever that thing is, how would you attack you if you were the evil one?
And then start looking around and being aware of how is the evil one attacking me? And let’s start building some barriers, some defense mechanisms around that, and it starts with surrendering that to the Lordship of Christ. That’s it, as the temptation is gonna come, the trials are gonna come, but if we surrender to the Lordship of Him and we are obedient to the Holy Spirit, that’s gonna change everything. That is gonna really change everything, because in those moments, fellas, we understand that you know what these temptations are coming. These temptations are gonna try to throw me off, but you know what? I’m gonna just surrender to what I’m doing to Him and let God, god, direct me. It frees you up. It takes so much pain and stress off. You’re just not gonna have to deal with all the things in this world because you’ll be walking in accordance to His will. So I want you to think about that.
What internal battles do you need to surrender right now? Is there something that you have gone on in your life that you know what, christomar, think about it. Yeah, I just need to go ahead and get that out, because all it’s doing is pulling me down. It’s robbing my joys, robbing any type of goodness or kindness or faithfulness that I have in my life, because I’m trying to manage this on my own. And, fellas, there’s something to be said when a man gets to that point and he says you know what? I don’t have this, I don’t, I’m gonna surrender this to God, I’m gonna let Him have this, I’m gonna let Him show me which way to go, and then I’m gonna walk in obedience to that. When you get to that point, that’s when you’re truly growing in Christ. All right, so, fellas, let’s share a little bit of some good news as well.
We do this on every spiritual kickoff, okay, and this is where we take a second. Everything we do, it’s in line with us, it’s pointing others to the goodness of the gospel, and if you’ve never surrendered your life to the Lordship of Christ and you’re listening to my voice right now, there is a reason that you’re here. I don’t know what that reason is. All right, I have no clue why. You’re listening to this guy from North Carolina, talk about Jesus and leadership and temptations and all the things that are going on. But you’re here and I thank you for being here, and I’m gonna encourage you. You’ve never taken that step of obedience to surrender your life to Christ, to consider that today. Today could be the day that changes everything for you.
And it starts off with just admitting that you’re a sinner. You are a sinner in need of a savior. You’re not just somebody who needs a coach or needs a pat on the back or needs somebody to come up and be a cheerleader. No, it’s not what you need. You need a savior and I can’t be that for you. Your wife can’t, your boss, whoever it is that you’re looking to this world to be your savior. They’re gonna come up empty. They’re gonna always come up short. But you need to understand. You are a sinner in need of a savior.
Then you have to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Very simple, he’s it. He came from heaven on a rescue mission for us. He lived a perfect life, the perfect example for each and every one of us. Then he paid a penalty for our sin on that cross and Jesus died. They let him in a tomb. Then, three days later, he overcame death and now he says to the right hand of the Father. You have to truly believe that he is the Son of God. Now he’s some nice person or some rabbi or some mystical creature. No, he was God in flesh. He was it. He is the way, he is the truth, he is the life. No one gets through the Father except through him. Guys, you have to believe that. Then, once you believe that in your heart, you have to move it from your head to your heart. Once you believe it in your heart, you have to confess to the Lord. This is where a lot of guys miss it. They can get to yeah, I believe in God, I believe in Jesus, but they never confess him as Lord of real life. That’s where the rubber meets the road.
You want to know why you’re struggling, why you don’t have this discontentment in your life. It could be because you haven’t surrendered your life to the Lordship of Christ. Take that step of obedience. Surrender that thing to him. Let him guide and direct you. When you do that, you’re going to have the peace that passes, all understanding Flood over you. You’re going to have the Holy Spirit. It’s going to come, god, and direct you within. We’ve got the lion within us right. It’s going to be guiding, it’s going to be showing you. Then you start walking that step each and every day of obedience as you grow closer to him. It doesn’t happen overnight. You’re going to need other brothers and sisters that come alongside you to help you grow, but this step right here, do not miss this. If you’ve never taken that step and surrendered to him, days are day.
I’d love to pray with you. So follow whoever’s listening right now. They are ready right now to confess your Lord of their life. I just pray that you hear their prayer. I pray that you move in your life. I pray that you put some people in their life that can help and guide and direct them. I pray that you follow them with them, taking this one step of obedience that you show them the path that you desire. They surrendered their earthly desires to that old person that is dead. Now they are walking now in the path that you desire for their life. I pray all this. Cordon your will in Jesus name. Amen, all right.

So if you’re going, if you’re feeling those temptations you feel like the evil ones constantly throwing those arrows at you clean the scripture like this Read all around it before and after it.
