In this episode:
Have you ever considered the life-altering power of staying rooted in your faith?
Let’s explore the profound metaphor of the vine and branches from John 15:4, revealing the necessity of a deep, sustaining connection with Jesus Christ. This episode promises to illuminate the path to a thriving spiritual life by emphasizing the dangers of spiritual isolation and the incredible fruit borne from abiding in Jesus. We will unpack how our identities as children of the most high king are not just a status but a journey of transformation that infuses our daily lives with love, joy, and peace.
Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. Click To Tweet John 15:4
Welcome to the Lion with Ennis, a podcast serving Christian men who are hungry to be the leaders God intends you to be. I’m your host, chris Granger. Let’s jump in. All right, guys. Spiritual kick all time.
I must admit, I get so excited about these SKOs. I absolutely love doing them, I love preparing for them, I love just thinking through God’s Word and trying to help you guys each and every week. So let’s dig into it, okay. So this week we’re going to be in the Book of John. It’s the Book of John, chapter 15, verse 4,. It says Remaining me and I in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself but must remain in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. So now let’s take a look at this. Let’s figure out how we can simplify and apply this as leaders in our life. Okay, very first thing, to get on the stand Where’s the Book of John? Now, guys, I know you know I do this every week because some of you may be like come on, chris, we should know where this is now. Now get it. You may know not everyone does, okay, so John is the last book of the Gospels you got. Your Gospels are Matthew, mark, luke and John. That’s the very beginning of the New Testament. Okay, if you find your Old Testament, keep flipping through, usually there’s one page and that’s it represents about 400 years and boom right into the New Testament. Okay, right here, matthew, mark, luke and John, and what you see here is the last of the I Am statements, and Jesus has given these directly.
Okay, now let’s just go through the I Am statements real quickly. Start with the Bread of Life. That’s in John 635. And then he talks about he’s the light of the world. That’s in 812. And he talks about he’s the door or the gates I’m depending on the version of scripture that you have. That’s 10, seven. Then, right at just past that and 10, 11, you have the Good Shepherd. So the gate and Good Shepherd they typically have stories that go together. Then you have the resurrection and the life. That’s in 1125. Then you have the last one before you get to where we’re at today. This is the way the truth and the life. That’s in John 14, 6. Then we get to the vine. Okay, now we’re in 15th floor of this one. Right, we get to the vine. So let’s see again how can we simplify and apply this, lead those leaders and actually walk this one scripture out.
So I want you to think about right now how often that when we leave, we feel like we have to do everything on our own. And when we do that, we start to isolate. Okay, when we isolate, guess what? You can still run, you can still function, you can still think on your own, but at some point you’re going to run out of steam. You just are. And when you run out of steam, this is when we make bad decisions. This is when things like depression starts sitting in. This is when drugs in our life, alcohol or any other type of sin it could be sexual sin or things like that that stuff’s going to come in. What we’re trying to do in those cases really is numb us. We’re trying to numb us from the fact that we’re struggling or the things that are all stirring at us. And Jesus is making the same connection here for those that are trying to surrender and follow Him, because if we don’t want to bear fruit in our life the fruit that he wants right, we’re going to have to remain in Him.
As this parable has basically a three core components guys, you have the, you have the. If you go back and you read it, you have the garden, which is God the Father. Okay, and this, right here, in this scenario, he is the Creator. We have to remember this. Didn’t you have the vine and the vine? Right here, the gardener plants the vine. This is Christ. Okay, the vine is necessary because it connects us to a third part of the equation, where we start coming in the branches, because that’s us, we’re just a bunch of branches, fellas, that’s all we are. So now, think about it.
I don’t know how often you guys go grocery shopping I don’t go grocery shopping that much anymore but what do you do? Very less time. You bought some grapes, okay, and they look great. Right, they look delicious, grapes are awesome, they’re good for you. When you first buy them, what they have, that that firmness to them, you bring them home, you put them in the fridge or whatever you do with your grapes, and then they take some time, right, after a little bit of time, those grapes not going to be as good as delicious as you thought they were. Right, because those grapes they are essentially. When you buy them, at that point, they’re essentially dead. They are why? Because they’re not connected to the vine. There’s a limited timeline for those grapes to be good, to provide us nourishment, and if we, if we eat them during that time, I find we’re good, but it’s still, at the end of the day, they’re dead.
And right here, if you get past the point of consumption, guess what? You’re not going to eat those things. Right, where they end up, they end up in a trash or compost pile or something. Right Now, for the immediate time after purchase. They are good, they satisfy, right, but the only reason is they can only satisfy for so long because they’re disconnected from the vine. Once they’re disconnected, they’re losing, they’re just they’re they’re, they’re fading away.
Now I want you to, I want you to think about this for a second. Flip that scenario. Think about your own personal wall. We, when we try to do this thing called life alone you know I’m talking about fellas, bootstrapping, forging ahead. I’m going to do what I want to do, right, I’m going to chase happy and this is going to go on. I’m going to make it happen. Well, it’s not going to last.
You Think about all Elon Musk. I mean super successful dude, brilliant, so much smaller than I am, okay, rich beyond all, all of our dreams, and at the end of the day that dude is going to stand in front of the same creator that I do. And when I start thinking about that way, you know, this verse calls me right here to be connected to him, and if I do that, that’s going to make me a better leader, and I think for me it’s just encouraging. It’s also pretty eye-opening and for guys like like Elon, who refused to accept the Lordship of Christ, like you know what I don’t want to think of this world if it’s going to separate me from him. And this is this is just such an important reminder.
We have to stay connected to what matters most in life, and when we do that and what matters most is our relationship with Christ, everything else is gone. We’ll go figure it out because we’re in a battle. Hurdles are going to come, finance is going to be tested right, your family is going to disappoint you, marriage is going to struggle, your careers are going to change, but at the end of the day, if you’re not connected, if you’re not connected to something greater than yourself, then we’re at risk beyond anything else that we could think or imagine. Right, guys, you’re just, you’d like to rest of the world. So if you’re a leader, I know a lot of you guys are.
You have to recognize the need to stop and then, when you stop, you better invite Jesus into all aspects of your life. I’m talking about all aspects. Specifically, look for areas that you separated from the vine. You better start fighting like a madman to reconnect, because he is there, and maybe that could be areas of finances. I know for a lot of guys this is a struggle area. You know what? God, I got almost room for that. I got almost room. I’m going to follow you. I’m going to money my way. If you’re doing that, better be careful. Surrender your finances to him. How about the bedroom? All right, lord, I got it. I’m going to follow you. I’m going to be a good Christian man. But when it comes to what goes on in my bedroom or what you don’t, what, there is a sexual, the sexual decisions in my life, I need you to stay out of that. I’ve got that covered, telling you gotta be careful.
How about as a parent? Are you inviting him to help you parent your children, as you’re trying to parent your kids alone? Guys, I got four of them here. I got you know. Wow, we’ve lost faith, but I mean the ones that we have here. If I try to do this thing called parenting by myself or just me and my wife, we’re not going to do it. We have to invite him in.
How about? Into your career? Have you ever just sat down and said you know what, god, I want to do, what you’ve called me to do? I feel like there’s this nudge. Maybe it’s not even ministry work. Guys, don’t get crossed up here.
Are you finding opportunities in the work that you’re doing right now? Could you be a light? How could you stay connected to the vine in the meetings you have on your schedule today? Just look at your schedule. Whatever meetings you have coming up today, how can you stay connected to him in that meeting? It could be how you respond in it, I don’t know, but you need to think about this and understand it. You know what? I have an opportunity as a leader today, as a Christian leader, to stay connected to the vine, or I have the opportunity to be completely disconnected.
I’m telling you, when you disconnect, guys, you have to be careful, because if you keep reading the scripture, I’m not going to read it for you. Today. What happens to the branches that are disconnected to the vine is not good, they end up in the fire. Yes, I don’t want that for you. You have to recognize the need to stop. You have to recognize the need to invite Jesus to your life. You have to look for areas where you separate it and you got to fight. Because he is there. He wants to spend that time with you guys. I’m telling you, he wants to spend the time with you. Don’t let anything fool you there for a second. He wants you to correct the course, and I know correcting it, the course and so many instances. It’s a simple change but it’s difficult. So what do you have to do? I taught to him. You got to read his word.
You need to connect with other believers, making sure you’re surrounding yourself with other believers. I encourage you to get involved with a local church. Share your faith with your family, share your faith with your friends, share your faith with the ones that you work with, and never for a second forget fellas we can’t forget this that you just talking to the guys here. You’re a son. We have ladies listening to your daughter of the most high king and as long as you’re connected to the vine and you’re ready to produce amazing fruit, that’s going to make a tremendous impact for the kingdom. This is fruit that you can’t produce on your own Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, general self control all that type of fruit that’s supernatural fruit that only is possible when you’re connected to the vine and when you’re doing what he’s calling you to do. You’re going to produce that and that fruit is going to pour out and you’re going to be able to do some amazing things.
Not because you’re awesome I mean I’m sure you’re like you guys are awesome but because God is working through you. It’s really changes your mindset and you’re going to have this, this desire to pursue him more, to do more for him, to do more to glorify him in each and everything that you do today, tomorrow and every day that he gives you. So, guys, don’t take this lame man, don’t take this for granted. Just put this on the side and be like yeah, I get it. I’m just going to kind of, I’m going to be loosely connected to the vine. Don’t plug into that vine. Let him feed you, let him nurse you, let him guide you and direct you.
He didn’t use that to produce good things in your life, because you never know how he’s going to use you to save one person, because maybe that’s the one thing he has planned for you. He wants you to just save one, and you know what? That’s a life worth living, because you just saved that one from a life separated from him for all eternity. Guys, there’s nothing more fulfilling or encouraging. I can tell you that stepping out, doing what God’s called you to do, being obedient, and then seeing someone else surrender to the Lordship of Jesus, it’s a beautiful thing, it’s a beautiful moment, and I won’t. You got to experience that more. That only happens when you start walking in obedience and you stay connected to the vine. He is the vine and there’s. You know what, god’s the gardener and I guess what. There’s some pruning involved, but that pruning that makes us stronger, that removes the things in our life Sex, alcohol, pornography, whatever things are greed, lust. He’s going to take that stuff away and he’s going to strengthen us and we’re going to be able to do what he’s called us to do and that, fellas, that’s a life worth living. So hopefully you’re encouraged by that.
I want you to think about this as well In your personal pursuit, the way you’re pursuing God right now. Would you call that bold, or would you call it cold, and it’s okay. Let’s just be real with each other. A lot of us are cold. You have an opportunity starting today to flip it. Not just be that pew sitter, not just be someone who sits on the sidelines and watch what other people are doing, but actually do things that God’s calling you to do. For me, it was starting to align with Dennis. It was all right. You’re going to do this. You’re going to be obedient to me and I said yes, sir, let’s go. I have no clue where this is going. Lots of things that I feel like he’s taken us. I’m no clue what the end result looks like, and you know what. That’s okay. It’s just going to keep being obedient. So what’s he calling you to do? Whatever he’s doing, pursue that with a boldness, because that’s what it’s all about.
If you’ve never surrendered your life to the Lordship of Christ and you’re here and listen to the line with Dennis, I don’t know why you’re here. It still blows me away when we look at how many people listen to the show, and I can tell you one thing we do everything here to honor and glorify God. So if you’re here, you’re listening to the line with Dennis. You’ve never surrendered your life to the Lordship of Christ. This is your opportunity. You have an opportunity today to make the biggest decision you’ve ever made in your life, and I’m imploring you to remove the distractions. And I know it’s easier to listen to a podcast and just maybe you’re on a treadmill or you’re just running errands, you’re driving a car, and it’s so easy to tune out the podcast and just have it as background noise, right. But if you’ve never surrendered your life to the Lordship of Christ, I pray that you stop what you’re doing right now, because today may be what right now could be the time.
God is trying to speak to you through something like the line with Dennis, and I want you to think about a couple of things. First of all, I need you to know who Jesus is. He is the Son of God, he is our Savior, he is our Messiah. We don’t worship a dead man. We worship a living Savior, and we understand when we are pursuing holiness, when we are trying to live our life and, of course, what he’s done.
We had this thing called sin and it separates us from Him. Unfortunately it does. There’s a separation there and no matter how hard I strive to get to Him, I’m never going to get there. It’s a great chasm because all is sin and fall in the short of glory of God and we just have that sin, each and every one of us, right, and you don’t need a coach, you don’t need someone else that’s going to help you. Just do these three things to get better. No, you don’t, because all of that stuff then and today, you’re still going to come up short.
Right, and you have to recognize that you are a sinner in need of a Savior. That Savior is so important to understand. You have to have a Savior. You cannot do this. You’re drowning in the sea and you need someone to come in and save you right now. And, chris, I don’t really think I’m a sinner. The evil one wants you to think that he does. He’s blinded to eyes of unbelievers. He wants you to think that you don’t need us, that you don’t need a Savior. He wants you to think that you’re not that bad Compared to my neighbor, chris, do you realize I’m pretty doggone? Good, you’re right, you may be, but compared to a holy and righteous God, you come up short. We all do so. Recognize that we’re sinners in need of a Savior. And guess what? God loves us so much that he sent his son for us.
So Jesus came on that rescue mission from heaven for you, for the listener who’s tuning in right now, for you, say your name. That’s who he came here for. He was born of a virgin. He did all the things. He showed all. He taught us. He showed us all the different ways to pursue a life following him and chasing him. And he went to that cross. He was the atonement, the payment satisfied. He made the payment for us for sin and we can’t make for ourselves. He’s the perfect, blameless lamb. That’s that’s it.
He died on the cross. They laid him in a tomb three days later. Guess what? He rose, he overcame death. That’s why I want to say we don’t worship a dead guy. We don’t Jesus alive. Then he ascended to right here in their father. No one gets. It happens to. The father said to him guys, this he is it, he is the way, he is the truth, he’s life. We know that, that’s it. So you have to believe that, believe that with all your heart. Do you have to confess this Lord? You have to actually take some action and surrender to the worship of Jesus.
And when you talk about surrendering, no guy likes to surrender. Why? Because that’s not how we’re. That’s not how we’re. You know that, our DNA. We want to fight, we want to stand firm, and I get that.
But then today, when it comes to surrendering, there’s one thing I’m gonna surrender to. I’m gonna fight for my family, I’m gonna fight for everything my freedom, all the things that we want to fight for. I’m gonna surrender to Christ and I’m gonna let him guide and direct me. You have to make that decision. Are you ready to surrender to him? And I mean fully surrender to Christ, not just in certain areas, but fully everything your money, your finance and not your relationships, your business, your friendships, all the things that are in your life, your community. Are you ready to surrender all that to him? Say, okay, lord, leave me. I’m listening. That’s hard to do. Not gonna paint this with a little brush to make you think it’s easy. This is hard to do. I’m tell you what it is so fulfilling and it’s worth it.
So I encourage you to lean in. Let him lead you, god, and let him, god, direct you and surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. So if you’ve just listened this last couple minutes, you just heard the gospel, you’ve heard how he came on that rescue mission for you. He’s paid for your pen, the penalty of sin for you. He is the way, the heaven. He will send the Holy Spirit to you, to God, and direct you. He just wants you to surrender to him. He wants you to follow. All he wants is your heart. When you’re ready, if you’re ready to give him your heart, let’s just pray together. Right now you can accept him into your heart. Today it’s a father for that listener right now there’s listening. You’re moving on him and maybe today for the first, first time, the gospel clearly came into focus.
I Thank you for that, lord. I thank you for helping that man, that woman who’s listening. Now pray for what we pray for all of us. They are surrendering to you. They’re accepting you as their Lord and Savior. That you give them encouragement and she put people in her life. That’s gonna help them grow, help them continue in their walk as believers. I just pray God if for his protection around them, particularly right now as they’re starting their Christian journey. Keep them safe from the attacks of the evil one. I pray you put people in their path that will help them grow in In their faith and their strength, be able to do the work that you’ve called them to do. There’s so thankful, god, for just a chance, just to have this opportunity to share the gospel and never know how you’re gonna use Things like the lion within us for a podcast to change someone’s life. We love you, we praise you. We pray everything according to your will in Jesus name, amen.
Well, I just for me at everything we do to lie within us the summit, the podcast, the community, shane and Gospels most important, it’s the most nervous I get. I’ve done hundreds probably this point, maybe thousands of podcasts. I got pretty comfortable behind the mic and I never get comfortable for the spiritual kick-off stuff and this is being full disclosure with you guys. I don’t get comfortable with that because there’s a reverence here. There’s an importance much bigger than the lion, it’s much bigger than me, of honoring God’s word and sharing truths.
It’s not easy. You get a lot of people who don’t like what you have to say or criticisms and all that stuff is fine, but then in the day I just want to hear the worst. Well done, good and faithful servant, and that’s what I want for you guys to hear too. I never want any of us to get there and hear it. Get away from me. I never knew you and I’m not trying to scare anybody here. I just want you to know that this work is meaningful. This work is hard For those encouragers out there, for the lion. I don’t know why I’m trying to be so just transparent in this one and just feel like in this moment I need to tell you for those people who encourage the lion within us. Thank you, thank you.
It’s not easy, for sure. A lot of hours, a lot of mental fortitude for the evil ones, so always trying to trip us up, but thank you for encouraging us, for our supporters, thank you so much, because we know that there’s so much we just can’t do without the support of others. For our community members. You guys are just incredible. Just, some of the members challenge me all the time just to bring my A game and I feel like what we’re building is important.
I feel like what we’ve built is, I feel I see it, it’s making an impact, and I know the evil one doesn’t like it and I’m okay with that. I’m okay with him not liking what we do. I want to be obedient to Christ and I want you guys to do that too, and I want us all to be bold in our pursuit and I want us all to stay connected through the vine and I think if we do that, you know what happened it’s going to happen. Let’s just hold our heads high. Let’s encourage each other, particularly fellow brothers in Christ, and get out there and do what he’s called us to do.
So I pray again if you just accept the Christ, your Savior, send me an email, chris, at the line within that US. I’m just going to be straight up, just send me an email. I’m going to send you some resources, I’m going to try to help you find a church and I’m just going to try to not going to try, I’m going to pray with you and just try to be an encouragement to you as you start your journey. So I love to hear from you as well, as if you just head over to the line within the US, you have all the resources there. You have our community. We have a donation page. If you guys feel led, if you feel like this year you want to support the line within us, that’d be awesome. I mean, I’m just to be honest. We’re intentionally doing everything we can bring more content, to bring more resources, to bring just more encouragement to as many men as possible. Just consider that. And then, most importantly, if you can leave a rating review and share the podcast with others, that’d be awesome. Okay, All right, guys, that’s enough.
I don’t know why I went down. I just wanted to be open with you all. It’s been on my heart, it’s been on my mind and I just can’t thank you enough for how, how awesome you guys are. So just thank you for listening, thank you for sharing. If there’s something I can do for you, if you have something we can pray for you about, please reach out. We don’t want to just be one to many, we want to connect. We want to connect. So let us know how we’ll be praying for you, okay, so enjoy.
