But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit. Click To Tweet 1 Corinthians 6:17
Welcome to the Lion Within Us, a podcast serving Christian men who are hungry to be the leaders God intends you to be. I’m your host, chris Granger. Let’s jump in. Alright, guys, spiritual kick all the time. I’m excited to be here with you today. Let’s get right into the word. Okay, so the word this week is going to be in the first Corinthians, chapter six, verse 17. But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit. Okay, very short verse. What does a lot to look at right there, guys. And again, the whole idea behind the spiritual kickoffs that give you some information to help get your week started right and to simplify and apply God’s word to be the leader God intends you to be and I know you guys this the spiritual kickoffs get a lot of downloads. We’re very encouraged and blessed by that. That means we’re doing something right. So we just want to keep doing that, keep being obedient to it. God, he gets all the glory. He reveals it to me. I just deliver it, okay.
So now, first thing we need to know is where’s first Corinthians? We don’t want to assume anything at the line within us, particularly if you have some new Christians out there. It’s okay, or maybe you’re not a Christian at all, you’re just trying to check this stuff out. Well, here let’s get. Let’s dig into it together. So when you open up your Bible, go to the New Testament, okay. And then, once you get there, go to your past, your gospels Matthew, mark, luke and John. Then you go past Acts, then you go past Romans, and then you get to the letter of first Corinthians. You get to say Corinthians gets way too far, okay, just back up. So now, first Corinthians is. Paul wrote this letter and at the core of it he was really trying to set a clear warning about being lax in our morals. This is what Paul was trying to particularly right here, because this entire chapter covers why sexual immorality and other sins pull many away from the kingdom of God. But those who have surrendered to Christ have been washed, sanctified and justified and kind of get amen on this. I mean, that’s what it’s all about.
As you read, you get closer to this verse. You see a few examples of lust and flesh and what we need to be looking out for, right, there’s some things you kind of back up in the scriptures right before this verse. We’re looking at that. You see that directly. He shows us that our appetites and desire for things fellas Right. This is what we have to be careful of, because the world’s gonna show you these things, this thing, guess what. They’re gonna look great, right, you can be like man. If I just had that right now. You ever yourself saying that? Be careful, this is the things of this earth that’s pulling you in and usually, when that’s happening, it’s pulling you away. God, just be warned, because in fact, our bodies, guys, are made to glorify him. That’s it Bodies are made to glorify him. So if we’re not doing things with our bodies to glorify him, then what are we really doing? We have to check ourselves, and this is where we get to the burst we have for today. Now we got to see how we can simplify and apply this one, this one little excuse me this one little verse to our life. Okay, we got, we got to understand to be the leader guys called us to be. We need to see how we can apply this, and it starts with understanding who are we uniting with? Who are you uniting with? Because it can be easy to go to flow and unite with those who are absolutely crushing it and they’re seeing tremendous success. I’m gonna follow them.
I think about bandwagon people. You know those fans, right, they’re gonna jump on the bandwagon, the bandwagon as soon as a team starts rolling really good and things are all in there, they’re rocking, rolling, their winning championships or what have you. And then guess what? As soon as things fall off, you don’t see them around no more. Right, it’s just funny because, because those bandwagon fans, they can’t tell you one single thing about the team 10 years ago. Right, nothing about that. There’s nothing. There’s no substance there, even though in all appearances they’re diehard fans. Right, and that’s the hard part about being a leader fellas, no one who is truly with you versus knowing those that are going to turn their back on you as soon as they get a chance.
And you think about that, I’m telling you when you start thinking about that way and you’re on a fake journey, hey look, I know, sometimes I’ve been a bandwagon Christian. I have been, and maybe you have been too. But being a bandwagon Christian is not what we’re called to do. We’re called to be all in all in, no matter the cost. Right, and think about that when you’re truthful with yourself. I think we all can admit we’ve been bandwagon Christians from time to time, we just, it’s just, it’s easy to fall into that trap, right?
How about? How about? Think about this what evidence of do you see in your life of being 100% united with him and spirit? Right, so, here I’m gonna throw a couple. I’m gonna throw a couple at you now, I’m gonna, I’m gonna test you. Now, how about when someone cuts you off in traffic? Are you not in spirit with it? Are you with him at that moment? How about? Let’s see, maybe you lose your job? Okay, that’s tough. What if your wife were to get sick, I mean really sick? Or let’s just say, you know, we’ve had some people on this show, including myself, who’s experienced this let’s just say, you lose a child. Would you be united with him then? Right, I know these are hard things to think about. Well, chris, why are you taking it so dark? Well, I’m just telling you because this stuff is real, this is life.
If you think it’s gonna be easy to be a Christian and you just wanna be a bandwagon Christian, just go to flow, because it doesn’t cost you anything. And you’ve got the coffee cup that says Philippians 4-13, right, and you’re on all the power committees at your church and you’re not united with the Lord. You’re gonna miss it and I don’t want you to miss it. I don’t want you to miss it. I’m too passionate about this to try to just fluff over things and give you a cushy little message here on Spirit, your Kick Off. I want you to understand what’s at stake. Does Philippians 4-13, is that important? Yes, when you understand that it’s him who gives you the strength, right? It ain’t you If you’re looking at it to you in that verse. No, you missed it, right? We completely missed it. And I want more for you because, you see, right here, I can tell you one thing for sure fellas Authenticity. Can I be hidden? It just can’t.
A true believer that’s united with the Lord and Spirit will surrender to the call of the Holy Spirit in every situation. Right, that may mean that you gotta go against the grain, and what’s against what some people may see as innocent, okay. Or you may need to admit to your spouse that you’re addicted to some things, maybe pornography, or spending money or lying, whatever it is. Or instead of saying, you know what I’m blessed in, highly favored, and next time somebody says, how are you doing at church, you actually tell them the truth. I know there’s no room in this world for the truth. But let’s just say you pretended and you did. You actually showed real emotion and vulnerability. What would that do for you? I’m telling you, this is going to change everything.
And this verse right here, this verse right here by being united with Him. It gives us insight, it gives us encouragement. And the verse after that, right, it tells us what we need to do to actually to. How do we unite with Him, with the Spirit? You better flee, flee the things of this world. That means get out, right, get it out of your life. Whatever you have to do. It means you got to cut your own off and cut it off. Get that immorality out. If you do that, it’s going to change things. And how do you get a lot of this stuff out? You bring it into delight, you bring it to Him. You just let Him deal with it. Let His grace pour over you, let Him show you and God direct you.
You’re not defined by any of this stuff, fellas, not in the mistakes you’ve made to find you. Not a single one of them. But you are responsible for repenting. Okay, don’t forget, don’t miss that now. Yeah, thanks to the mistakes, if that stuff can be forgiven. It can be, but you have to repent, and I mean truly repent, and not just say I’m sorry, I did that, lord, I’m sorry, I won’t do it again. You can go do it again. No, I’m talking about Lord. I cannot believe I failed you. I am so sorry. I’m begging you for forgiveness.
Right, and this is where we need to really think about when you’re talking about scripture like this, because this doesn’t matter where you’re at in your leadership journey or your Christian journey. You better unite with the Lord in everything that you do. I mean everything that you do and anybody you unite it. When you unite with Him, you better be obedient to whatever he tells you to do, whatever he desires. That needs to be the goal, that needs to be a priority. It’s not about your stuff anymore, it’s about His Right. And if you start doing that and understand, you know what.
Lord I’m going to take this verse right here and the one who joins himself with the Lord is one spirit with Him. To me that sounds pretty dog-worn awesome. Be one spirit with God, remain His image, but if we unite with Him, we are one spirit. The Holy Spirit comes within us. That’s going to dwell inside of us, right, that old person’s gone. The new heart, the new eyes, the new mind, the new way to be able to guide and direct our life. All happens when we surrender to the Lordship of Christ and when you unite with Him.
You’re going to naturally look at verse 18. Fully immorality. You’re going to naturally want to do that because you want to get that stuff out of your life. You’re not going to want to play in that pool. No, why? Because it’s just going to be a turnoff, because you’re wanting to pursue the things of the Lord. If you’re wanting to pursue the things of the Lord, these other things, they’re not going to have the luster, they’re not going to be that attractive to you because you’re going to see them for what they truly are Evil, dirty, dark. I’m telling you.
We get to look at the impact of pornography, of what it’s doing to people, right? Child abuse, abortion, right. How about the way we fraud with our finances, all these things that pull us away? Adultery, all the big ones. It starts when we turn away from God and we turn it and we start doing things that we want to do in pursuit of happy. You guys know how I feel about happy. It ain’t about happy. It’s about joy and peace and patience and kindness and goodness and faithfulness and general self-control, all wrapped in love. That’s what it’s about.
So when you unite, when you decide to unite yourself with the spirit, I’m telling you, fellas, it changes your mindset, it changes how you approach life, it changes how you approach business. It’s gonna change all your relationships. It’s gonna change the way your wife sees you. It’s gonna change the way your kids see you. It’s gonna change the way your pastor sees you. It’s gonna change the way your neighbor sees you. It’s gonna change everything. But it’s not about you. It’s about reflecting Christ through you and letting others see Christ in the way you act, the way you act, your behaviors, your actions, your interactions, the way they, your speech, your talk. I’m telling you it’s just going to change things, and that is my prayer for you. So I want you to think about this now. Who are you united with? Answer this truthfully. I’m not talking about united you. We’re all united with Christ.
On Sunday, wednesday afternoon, three o’clock, you’re finishing up a meeting, getting going to one. Who are you united with at that moment? Are you united with him? How does that look like? How can you show that. How can you bring him into that meeting you’re getting ready to go to? When you finish listening to this podcast, start thinking about it that way, fellas. It changes the game. That’s what I want the most for you Now to be united with him and spirit you have to surrender to him.
But if you’ve never surrendered your life to the Lordship of Christ and you’re just going through the motions maybe you’re just a pew sitter you check out your sermon from time to time, for some reason, you’re here at the Lionel Dennis and you kind of like the way this old guy right here is talking about the Bible and sharing some things and you’re curious. Well, you’re here for a reason, I don’t know why. I don’t know how the algorithm algorithms got it to you, don’t know. I know the one thing God, I swear it doesn’t make any mistakes If you’re here and you never surrender your life to the Lordship of Christ.
You have an opportunity today and it starts by understanding that you are a center right, and a center is anything that separates us from God. And we all sin and we all fall short, fall short of the glory of God, every single one of us. Now, I know, compared to your neighbor. You’re pretty cool, right, you’re not as bad as that dude, but compared to a holy and righteous God, you fall short. So do I. We all do. That’s the standard. It’s not to anyone else to out there, it’s to him. So understand. We fall short there. So there you go. You need to understand that. That’s a hard one, didn’t it? Yeah, I’m a center.
Then I got to believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that he truly is the Son of God. He came on that rescue mission for us so that we could be united with him. He went to the cross. He paid the penalty for our sins. He went to the tomb. He rose three days later. He overcame that. The path of salvation only goes through him. There is no other name under heaven that is given to my man by which we must be saved. Jesus is it.
Once you believe that you got to do something. You have to actually do something. It’s a free gift. You got to ask for it. God confess him as Lord, if that’s the most Lord of your life, not just Lord over Sunday, every day, every moment.
Once you reached that point in life, what you recognize, you know what I’m broken. I can’t do this alone. I’m hurting. I need something greater than anything I can do. Once you reach that point, you believe that Christ is just, is the Son of God. He is the Savior. You can confess him as Lord. I’m here to tell you.
Is your situation going to automatically get better? Probably not. It’s not going to get easier, it’s just not. You’re going to still have the trials, but you will now have hope. You have the Holy Spirit to guide and direct you. There’s a lot of bad things out in this world. They just are. But you serenity in your life to the Lordship of Christ. You can be with you In every one of those situations. He will guide, he will direct, he will show you the way he wants you to have that life, have it through the full, have it abundantly. She can’t experience it. To you Surrender.
I pray right now, in this moment that you are let’s just pray If you’re ready to surrender your life to the Lordship of Christ. We do this on every spiritual kick off episode because we want to put him in the gospel at the center of everything we do. So let’s pray, so follow for that one listener. They’re on the right now, they’re just. Maybe they have a tear going in their cheek, they recognize that they are a center. They need a savior. They don’t need some coach to come along the way, lord, they just need a savior. They need to turn it all over to you. I pray you give them encouragement right now, feel your presence, to know how much they are loved by you, know how much you care about them. The feel, just the moment, that your presence in their life is pretty, lord. For whatever they’re dealing with right now, the struggles that they have right now, I pray that they remember all that’s just attacks from the evil one that that life that you have, you’ve promised for us a ways we make that decision. So I pray that they surrender to hear their prayer, that you put people in their lives to guide and direct them, to disciple them, to continue with their Christian walk that starts today. We pray all this according to your will, in Jesus name, amen. If you just surrendered your life to the Lordship of Christ, congratulations. That’s probably one of the best things I ask for me doing.
